CHAPTER 4: THE MORNING AFTER

The hospital corridors slowly came alive again.

New nurses arrived.

Coffee carts rolled through the halls.

Morning sunlight entered through the windows.

Margaret sat in a wheelchair waiting for discharge papers.

The same police officer who had been present the night before passed by.

He stopped.

"How are you feeling today?"

Margaret smiled.

"Better."

He nodded.

"I'm glad your family came."

After he left, Daniel loaded her small suitcase into the car.

Margaret looked back at the hospital entrance.

Only twelve hours earlier, she had entered alone.

Now she was leaving surrounded by people who loved her.

As they drove away, Emily sat beside her.

Daniel looked into the rearview mirror.

"What would you like for breakfast?"

Margaret laughed softly.

"I haven't made that decision in years."

Emily smiled.

"Then today is a good day to start."

CHAPTER 5: HOME

Several weeks later, Margaret sat on the back porch of Daniel's house.

Her grandchildren played in the yard.

The afternoon sun warmed her face.

She was taking her medications.

Attending her appointments.

Eating regular meals.

But more importantly, she was no longer alone.

Daniel walked outside carrying two cups of tea.

He handed one to her.

"I'm sorry," he said.

Margaret looked at him.

"For what?"

"For not seeing how much you needed us."

She reached over and squeezed his hand.

"We both forgot something."

"What?"

"Family isn't supposed to wait for emergencies."

The children laughed in the distance.

Birds moved through the trees.

For the first time since her husband had died, Margaret felt peace.

And Daniel finally understood something that hospitals witness every day:

Sometimes people don't collapse because their hearts are weak.

May you like

Sometimes their hearts simply become too heavy to carry alone.
