CHAPTER 6: THE FINAL RECKONING

The dawn light hit the top of the Evans Tower, casting a long, jagged shadow across the city. Richard stood on the balcony, watching the world wake up. In his hand was a encrypted drive containing every file Elena had hidden.

He had spent the night contacting independent news networks in other countries—networks that couldn't be bought, that were hungry for a story of this magnitude. He had set a dead-man’s switch: if he didn't check in by 8:00 AM, the data would automatically dump to every server on the internet.

The doorbell chimed. It wasn't the police. It was the CEO of Evans Enterprises, a man named Sterling, standing there with two bodyguards.

"Richard," Sterling said, smiling as if he were just visiting for coffee. "We need to talk about the boy and the box."

Richard stepped aside, inviting him in. "I’ve been expecting you, Sterling."

"You’re playing a dangerous game, Richard. You’re a man of status. Don't throw it away for an urchin and a box of memories."

Richard walked to the center of the room. He reached into his jacket and pulled out the drive, holding it up. "This isn't status, Sterling. This is the truth. And it’s going to cost you everything."

Sterling’s smile dropped. He signaled to his guards, but it was too late. Richard tapped a command into his phone, and the massive screens in the library flickered to life, showing the live feed of the data being uploaded to a dozen international news sites simultaneously.

"You’re finished," Richard said.

Outside, the distant wail of sirens began to build. Richard looked at the library door, where Tommy was peeking out, wide-eyed. Richard gestured to the boy to come forward.

"Look, Tommy," Richard said, his voice calm, resolute. "The truth is out. They can't hide in the shadows anymore."

The guards lunged, but the penthouse doors exploded open as a team of federal agents—not the ones on the payroll, but a specialized task force Richard had alerted through a back-channel in another state—stormed the room.

Sterling and his men were tackled to the ground. The chaos was overwhelming, but Richard didn't flinch. He walked over to Tommy and knelt down, placing his hands on the boy’s shoulders.

"It’s over, son," he whispered.

As they led Sterling out in handcuffs, Richard looked out the window. The city was already buzzing. Headlines were flashing, the internet was ablaze, and the world was beginning to look at Evans Enterprises with the disgust it deserved.

Richard didn't feel the pride of a victor; he felt the clean, sharp pain of a man who had finally begun to live. He had lost his company, his reputation, and his life as he knew it.

He stood up, took Tommy’s hand, and walked out of the penthouse. Behind them, the ruins of his empire were being sifted through for justice. Ahead of them, the sun was bright, blindingly, beautifully bright. They weren't just leaving a building; they were walking into a future that was, for the first time, entirely their own.
