Chapter 8 - The Queen's Table

Three months later.
The Bellweather County estate had been completely restored.
The betrayal of Nathan Calder and Dr. Reed had sent shockwaves through the New York underworld. Salvatore Moretti's syndicate, crippled by the failure of their coup and exposed by Vincent's intelligence network, had surrendered three major shipping terminals in Brooklyn to the Calder family to avoid an all-out mob war.
Nathan and Dr. Reed were currently serving life sentences in a maximum-security federal facility—handed over to federal prosecutors by Vincent with a mountain of unassailable financial evidence.
It was a brilliant, warm spring evening.
The grand dining room of the Calder estate was lit with crystal chandeliers and filled with fresh white roses.
Seated around the long mahogany table were the six primary capos of the Calder family, along with Geno, Aaron (who had fully recovered from his cardiac poisoning), and senior regional managers.
At the head of the table sat Don Vincent Calder.
He wore a tailored navy suit, looking healthier, stronger, and more commanding than ever.
The double doors opened, and a team of white-jacketed servers walked into the room, carrying polished silver trays.
Behind them walked Lena Brooks.
She wore an exquisite custom-tailored white chef's coat embroidered with gold thread along the collar, her dark hair styled elegantly, her face radiant with confidence and beauty.
She was no longer the invisible baker in the basement. She was the Executive Head of Domestic Operations and Personal Advisor to the Don.
The servers placed a beautiful plate in front of each guest: tender cuts of herb-crusted beef tenderloin served over a rich, velvety dark wine reduction, garnished with wild truffles.
The capos looked at their plates, then looked nervously at Vincent.
In the past, no one ate until Aaron tasted the food.
Vincent stood up.
He raised his crystal glass of red wine, his eyes fixing entirely on Lena, who stood at the right hand of his chair.
"Gentlemen," Vincent's powerful voice filled the room. "Three months ago, a woman walked into this room and saved my life. She didn't use a gun. She didn't use a knife. She used her intelligence, her courage, and her extraordinary heart."
The capos sat up straighter, listening with profound respect.
"For years, people believed that power in this family came from fear," Vincent continued, stepping close to Lena, taking her warm, soft hand in his before the entire leadership of his empire. "But Lena showed me that true power comes from trust. She is the heart of this house. She is my protector. And she is my equal."
Vincent looked down at Lena, his dark eyes brimming with an intense, devotion that made her breath catch.
"To Executive Chef Lena Brooks," Vincent toasted, raising his glass high. "The Queen of the Calder Family."
"To the Queen!" Geno roared, raising his glass.
"TO THE QUEEN!" the capos shouted in unison, raising their glasses, their voices echoing through the grand hall.
Lena smiled—a brilliant, dazzling smile that lit up her entire face. She felt Vincent's strong fingers intertwine tightly with hers, giving her a gentle, loving squeeze.
"Eat, gentlemen," Lena told the table with a playful wink. "I promise you... the sauce is safe."
Laughter and joyful conversation burst through the room as the capos dug into their meals with delight.
Vincent leaned down, his lips brushing against Lena's ear, his warm breath sending a delicious shiver straight to her soul.
"I have a new rule for the estate, my sweet Lena," Vincent whispered softly.
Lena looked up into his handsome, rugged face. "And what rule is that, Don Vincent?"
May you like
Vincent smiled—a warm, breathtaking smile—and pulled her close, kissing her deeply, right in front of the entire family.
"From now on," Vincent murmured against her lips, "the Don only eats from the hands of the woman he loves."
