Chapter 6 - The Return to St. Catherine's

Back in room 412 of St. Catherine’s Medical Center, the afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm amber glow across the white walls.
Claire sat propped up in bed, looking infinitely stronger than she had hours earlier when the nightmare had first begun. The IV line in her arm was gone, replaced by a simple saline lock, and her blood glucose levels had stabilized entirely under the careful supervision of endocrinologists.
The door swung open softly, and Detective Morales stepped inside, followed by a small, familiar figure holding a stuffed rabbit.
“Noah!” Claire gasped, throwing off her blanket and swinging her legs over the side of the bed.
Noah didn't wait. He ran across the room and threw his arms around his mother’s neck, burying his face in her shoulder. Claire held him tight, burying her face in his dark hair, letting out a sob of pure, unadulterated relief that had been building inside her chest for days.
“You’re safe,” Claire whispered repeatedly, kissing the top of his head. “You’re safe, baby. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry I didn't listen sooner.”
“You listened,” Noah mumbled against her collarbone. “You got the police.”
Detective Morales stood near the doorway, watching the reunion with a quiet, professional smile. She cleared her throat softly after a moment to let them collect themselves.
“He’s not going to bother you ever again, Mrs. Bennett,” Maya said. “Ryan is currently being held at the county detention center without bail. Federal prosecutors have already picked up the wire fraud and kidnapping charges, and local D.A.’s are adding attempted murder for the insulin poisoning.”
Claire looked up, holding Noah’s small hand in hers. “And Dr. Cole?”
“The hospital administration has already reinstated him with a full, formal apology,” Maya replied. “The news stations that ran that hit-piece footage have been forced to broadcast retractions. The complete, unedited security logs proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Dr. Cole was trying to save your life when he restrained you during that seizure.”
Just as Maya finished speaking, the door opened further, and Dr. Adrian Cole walked into the room.
He looked slightly tired, wearing his crisp white lab coat over a button-down shirt, but his posture was upright, his characteristic intensity shining in his sharp eyes.
Claire looked at him, a wave of profound gratitude washing over her. “Doctor... I am so sorry for what you went through because of us.”
Dr. Cole walked over to the side of the bed, glancing down at Claire’s chart before meeting her eyes. “Don’t apologize for being targeted by a monster, Claire. Just focus on keeping yourself and that little girl inside you healthy for the next few weeks.”

He reached out and checked the fetal monitor strapped lightly across Claire’s abdomen. The machine emitted a steady, robust rhythm—a strong, beautiful heartbeat filling the room with the sound of life.
“Her vitals are exceptional,” Dr. Cole noted with a faint, rare smile. “She’s a fighter. Just like her mother.”
