Chapter 9 - The Night of Reckoning

At the safe house in Queens, the back door handle rattled.
Sophia stood motionless in the hallway, the Beretta gripped tightly in both hands, her finger resting just outside the trigger guard.
Click.
The lock began to turn.
Sophia raised the barrel toward the door, her heart hammering against her ribs, every muscle in her body coiled like a spring.
The door swung open inward, letting in a draft of cold autumn air.
A gloved hand reached around the doorframe.
Sophia’s finger tightened on the trigger—
“Hold your fire!” a familiar, gravelly voice barked from the shadows of the landing.
The door pushed fully open to reveal Marcus Bell, his tactical vest dusted with road grime, stepping into the kitchen alongside two of his senior operatives.
Sophia lowered the pistol, her knees suddenly turning to water. She let out a long, ragged gasp, leaning heavily against the kitchen counter as the weapon slipped from her trembling fingers and clattered onto the linoleum.
Marcus caught her by the shoulder before she could slide to the floor, his face lined with genuine concern.
“Easy, Sophia,” he said softly. “You’re safe. The perimeter is secure.”
“Is it over?” she whispered, tears finally breaking free and tracking down her cheeks. “Did... did Lorenzo make it?”
“Lorenzo is fine,” Marcus said, a faint, grim smile touching his lips. “In fact, he just finished redecorating our old wine cellar in Long Island. Vincent is currently occupying the seat of honor.”
Sophia let out a shaky, hysterical laugh of pure relief. She wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve, looking toward Emma’s bedroom door to ensure the child hadn't woken up.

“He’s a hard man to kill,” she murmured.
“The hardest this city has ever seen,” Marcus agreed, gently patting her shoulder. “Pack your bags, Sophia. It’s time to go home.”
