Chapter 8 - Midnight in Trauma Room 2

The master bedroom was lit only by the flickering glow of emergency lanterns.

Standing beside a large surgical table in the center of the room was Dr. Julian Vance. He was dressed in full surgical greens, his hands covered in blood. Beside him, Martha Harris was frantically stuffing stacks of hundred-dollar bills and fake passports into a leather duffel bag.

Lying on the surgical table was six-year-old Maya. Her left leg was encased in a thick, white fiberglass cast. A cast saw was buzzing in Vance’s hand, its blade inches from her leg.

"Stop!" I screamed, slamming the heavy bedroom door open.

Vance whipped around, the cast saw whirring loudly. His eyes were bloodshot, his elegant hair wild and unkempt. He looked like a madman cornered in his own trap.

"Dr. Jenkins," Vance laughed hysterically over the saw's shriek. "You just don't know when to die, do you?"

"Drop the saw, Julian!" Detective Miller ordered, stepping into the room with his gun leveled directly at Vance's chest. "It's over! SWAT has the perimeter surrounded!"

Martha shrieked, dropping the duffel bag and cowering behind the bed.

"It's never over!" Vance roared.

With terrifying speed, Vance didn't drop the saw—he lunged forward, grabbing six-year-old Maya by her throat, pulling her small body in front of him as a human shield, pressing the spinning blade of the cast saw against her exposed neck.

"Back up!" Vance screamed, blood spray flying from his lips. "Back up or I'll open her carotid artery right now!"

Maya cried out, her tiny fingers clutching at Vance’s blood-stained wrists. "Doctor Sarah! Help me!"

Miller froze, his gun shaking slightly. "Vance, don't do this. Put the child down."

"She’s not a child!" Vance yelled wildly. "She’s fifty million dollars! She has the core viral strain in her femur cast! Do you have any idea who I sold this to?! If I don't deliver these vials tonight, they will flay me alive!"

I took a slow, calculated step forward, keeping my hands raised, making direct eye contact with Vance.

"Julian," I said softly, using his first name, stepping into his line of sight. "Look at me. I'm a doctor. Just like you. You took the Hippocratic Oath."

"Oath?!" he spat. "The oath is for fools who want to earn two hundred thousand a year working sixty-hour weeks! I built an empire!"

"You built a house of rotting flesh," I said, taking another tiny step. "You put maggots in an eight-year-old boy's arm. You let your own stepson flatline while his mother watched. Look at Martha, Julian. Look at your wife."

Vance glanced instinctively toward Martha, who was sobbing on the floor.

In that half-second of distraction, I didn't hesitate.

I lunged forward, diving under the spinning cast saw, and grabbed the power cord plugged into the wall outlet, yanking it with all my weight.

The cord snapped free. The saw died instantly.

Miller fired.

BANG!

The bullet struck Vance squarely in the shoulder. He groaned in agony, releasing his grip on Maya and stumbling backward into a glass medical cabinet, sending hundreds of vials crashing onto the floor.

I grabbed Maya into my arms, rolling across the floor, shielding her small body with mine as Miller tackled Vance to the ground, slamming his face into the shattered glass and clicking the handcuffs around his wrists.

Outside, the thunderous roar of SWAT sirens filled the night air. Blue and red lights flashed through the high arched windows of the estate.

I sat on the floor, holding little Maya tightly against my chest. She sobbed into my shoulder, her tiny arms wrapping around my neck.

"I've got you, baby," I whispered, kissing her soft hair as tears washed the dust from my face. "I've got you. It's over."
