Chapter 5 - The Bow of the Underworld

The single syllable hung in the air of the nursery like the striking of a cathedral bell.
“Ma.”
Dr. Bennett lowered his clipboard, his jaw dropping in pure medical impossibility. Newborns did not speak. They cried, they whimpered, they breathed—they certainly did not articulate complex syllables at three days old, let alone identify a woman they had met less than an hour ago.
Marco Duca, standing near the doorway with his arms crossed over his chest, slowly lowered his hands, his hardened expression turning into one of absolute, reverent awe.
Adrien Valente stood frozen.
He looked down at his son, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Hannah’s stunned, tear-filled eyes.
In the mafia, dynasties were built on blood, fear, and iron-clad loyalty. Men bowed to power. They bowed to wealth, to guns, to territory. But no Valente—no man or woman in the history of the syndicate—had ever witnessed an heir, a future king of the East Coast empire, bestow a title of absolute authority upon a stranger before his eyes were even fully adjusted to the light.
Luca let out a soft coo, reaching his tiny hand out toward Hannah once more.
Hannah’s breath hitched. All her anger, all her plans to grab the envelope of cash and flee back to her ruined bakery, evaporated into thin air. She took a hesitant step forward and gently took the baby back into her arms.
As soon as she held him, Luca closed his eyes and drifted back into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Adrien looked at Hannah—not as a tired baker from Queens, not as a hired nurse, but as the unmistakable cornerstone of his home.
He turned his head slightly toward the door.
Marco Duca didn't wait for an order. He stepped out into the hallway, where twelve of the syndicate’s highest-ranking capos, regional bosses, and financial advisors had gathered, waiting anxiously for news of the heir.
Marco pushed the double doors wide open, stepping out into the grand hallway.
The capos—men who controlled billions in shipping, casinos, and real estate, men who never lowered their heads to anyone—looked up expectantly.
Marco didn't speak. He simply turned, knelt down on one knee on the polished marble floor, and bowed his head toward the open nursery door where Hannah stood holding the baby.
One by one, the twelve capos—hardened veterans of a brutal criminal empire—followed their commander’s lead. They dropped to one knee in the hallway, lowering their heads in unanimous, absolute submission to the woman no one had chosen, but whom destiny had crowned.
Inside the nursery, Adrien Valente stepped toward Hannah, unpinned the heavy silver signet ring of the Valente patriarch from his lapel, and took her hand.
Without asking for permission, he slid the heavy ring onto her thumb.
“You wanted to know what I want?” Adrien whispered, his grey eyes locked onto hers with a terrifying, beautiful intensity. “I want you to rule this house with me. Not as a captive. As my wife. As Luca’s mother.”
Hannah looked down at the silver ring, then at the sleeping baby in her arms, and finally at the most dangerous man in New York, who was looking at her as if she were the only light left in his world.
She didn't pull her hand away.
“If I stay,” Hannah said, her voice ringing clear and strong through the silent room, “we do things my way. No threats. No blood in the nursery. And we start by turning that bankrupt bakery into a foundation for children who don't have anyone to fight for them.”
Adrien Valente smiled—a real, genuine smile that chased the shadows from his face for the first time in months.

He bowed his head to her, sealing an empire’s fate with a single, reverent nod.
“Done.”
