Chapter 5 - The Ghost of Baltimore

The name echoed off the concrete walls of the underground bunker, freezing every soul in the room.

Evelyn pushed herself up from the chair, her exhaustion entirely forgotten. The blood on her hands suddenly felt freezing cold. She crossed the room in two strides, snatching the decrypted printout from Marcus’s hand.

Her eyes scanned the document. Project Veritas. Principal Investigator: Dr. Thomas Hart. Unauthorized dissemination of synthetic neurotoxin formulas. Status: Sealed by Federal District Court, Maryland.

“How do you have this?” Evelyn’s voice shook, a terrifying tremor of rage and long-buried grief. “These files were locked in the federal archives in Washington under strict judicial seal. Not even the Baltimore police department had full access!”

Adrian stepped between her and Marcus, his expression dark, defensive, and fiercely protective. He motioned for Marcus to leave the room, and the heavy vault door clicked shut behind the security chief, leaving the two of them alone in the sterile bunker.

“My organization has long arms, Evelyn,” Adrian said quietly. “When you applied for employment under a pseudonym two years ago, my background check flagged discrepancies in your social security history. Out of caution, I dug deeper. I found out who your father was. And more importantly, I found out why he died.”

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. “The official report said he died in a single-vehicle car crash on Route 40. A tragic accident.”

“Your father discovered that the pharmaceutical conglomerate funding his research was synthesizing an illegal neurotoxin disguised as a commercial painkiller,” Adrian revealed, his voice dropping into a harsh, bitter register. “He tried to blow the whistle to the FDA. Two days before he could release the data, his car’s brake lines were severed, and his laboratory was torched. The men who ordered that hit weren't local thugs, Evelyn. They were corporate syndicates backed by federal immunity.”

“I know,” Evelyn whispered, tears finally breaking over her lashes, hot and blinding. “I found the backup drive in his office before the fire consumed everything. That’s why they came after me. That’s why I had to run, change my name, and hide in a mafia mansion in the middle of the Arizona desert.”

Adrian stepped closer, reaching out to gently wipe a tear from her cheek with the pad of his thumb. His touch was shockingly tender for a man whose hands had signed death warrants.

“And that is why Mateo Salazar is hunting you,” Adrian said, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place with terrifying clarity. “Salazar isn't just fighting me for control of Phoenix’s drug routes. Six months ago, his cartel partnered with the same pharmaceutical syndicate that murdered your father. They’re using our port infrastructure to smuggle precursor chemicals for that exact neurotoxin.”

Evelyn stared at him, the horrifying scope of the conspiracy expanding before her eyes. “When I recognized the military-grade C-4 under your car... I wasn't just saving your life because you happened to be my boss. Salazar’s men must have recognized me on the estate cameras during one of their reconnaissance runs. They didn't just want to kill you, Adrian. They wanted to eliminate the last living witness to your father’s research.”

“Which means you were never safe here,” Adrian said, his jaw tightening until the muscle ticked. “And neither was I.”

“So what do we do?” Evelyn demanded, her fear hardening into a cold, lethal resolve. She had spent two years running, hiding, and scrubbing floors in terror. But standing in the underground bunker, covered in blood and fueled by the ghost of her father, she realized running was no longer an option. “Salazar has the files. He knows who I am. If we wait for him to make the next move, we’re already dead.”

Adrian looked at her—really looked at her—not as a shy maid who saved his life, but as an equal. A partner in a war that had just become deeply, irrevocably personal.

A slow, dangerous smile crept across his lips.

“We don't wait,” Adrian said. “We take the fight to his front door.”
