Chapter 3: Secrets in the Dark

That night, the house felt heavier than ever, as if the walls themselves were burdened by the malice of its mistress. Lily and Rosie were asleep in Lily's bedroom, huddled together for warmth and comfort, their stomachs rumbling with hunger. Margaret had managed to sneak a few crackers and bottles of water into their room after Victoria had retired to her master suite, but it was a meager comfort against the psychological warfare being waged against them.
Margaret sat in her small living quarters on the first floor, unable to sleep. Her arm and back ached from the tension of the day, but her mind was hyper-alert. Victoria's extreme reaction to Lily’s mention of the woman was proof enough. Lily hadn’t imagined it. There was an intruder, or rather, a guest, who was being kept a secret from Daniel Harper.
At exactly 1:15 AM, the floorboards above Margaret's room creaked.
Margaret froze. Her room was directly beneath Daniel’s private home office. Daniel was still in New York; his flight wasn’t scheduled to land at O'Hare until the following afternoon. Victoria’s bedroom was at the opposite end of the east wing.
Quietly, slipping off her shoes to minimize sound, Margaret crept out into the dark hallway. The mansion was cast in shades of gray and black, illuminated only by the faint moonlight filtering through the tall arched windows. She climbed the back servants' staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
When she reached the second-floor corridor leading to the executive suite, she noticed a sliver of amber light spilling out from beneath the heavy oak door of Daniel’s office.
She approached with absolute caution, pressing her back against the wallpapered wall. She could hear muffled voices inside.
“You’re taking too long, Veronica. He’s returning tomorrow,” a voice whispered. It was Victoria. Her tone wasn't its usual icy, controlled self; it was frantic, laced with anxiety.
“Do you think this is easy?” another voice replied.
Margaret gasped silently, covering her mouth with her hand. The second voice sounded identical to Victoria’s. The cadence, the accent, the pitch—it was a carbon copy.
“Daniel’s encryption is legendary,” the second voice, Veronica, continued. “He uses a decentralized ledger system for the offshore accounts. I’ve managed to clone his security token, but I need his primary biometric override. Without it, the wire transfers to the Zurich accounts will trigger an automatic fraud alert at the SEC.”
“We don't have time!” Victoria hissed. “The girls are starting to suspect something. The older one, Lily, saw you the other night. She told me to my face. I threatened her, but she’s stubborn, just like her mother was. If she mentions a word to Daniel, he’ll start investigating. He’ll look at the security feeds.”
“The security feeds are looped, sister dear. I took care of that the first day I arrived,” Veronica said with a low, cynical chuckle. “Daniel thinks he’s a genius, but he’s blinded by his work and his grief. He truly believes you’re the savior of his family. He won’t look into anything unless you give him a reason to.”
“Just get the passwords and the account routing numbers,” Victoria ordered. “Once the fifty million is transferred, we initiate the final phase. We file for divorce, cite irreconcilable differences, and take the settlement. But I want that offshore money secured first. I won’t settle for a measly few million from a prenuptial agreement.”
“Fine. I’ll need one more night in the office. Tomorrow, when he returns, make sure he drinks the tea I prepared. It has the sedative. It will keep him deep in sleep while I use his thumbprint to authorize the final API transfer.”
Margaret felt a cold sweat break out across her forehead. It wasn't just a strict stepmother situation; it was a criminal conspiracy. Victoria had an identical twin sister named Veronica, and together they were planning to rob Daniel Harper of fifty million dollars and ruin his life, using sedatives and identity theft. And the girls were collateral damage, being terrorized to keep them quiet.
Margaret backed away slowly, her mind reeling. She needed to get to a phone, she needed to call Daniel, she needed to call the police. But as she turned the corner to head back to the staircase, she bumped into a solid, warm figure.
She stifled a scream, her eyes widening in terror.
“Margaret?” a small voice whispered.
It was Lily. She was holding a small digital camera—an old model that Emily had given her for her tenth birthday.
“Lily! What are you doing out of bed?” Margaret whispered frantically, pulling the girl into the shadow of a large marble bust.
“I heard them too,” Lily whispered, her eyes shining in the dark. “I followed you. Look.”
Lily held up the small LCD screen of the camera. Through the cracked door of the office, Lily had managed to snap a photograph. The image was slightly blurry, but it clearly showed two identical women standing next to Daniel’s desk. One was Victoria, wearing her cream suit, and the other was Veronica, wearing a dark trench coat, holding a specialized hacking device attached to Daniel's mainframe computer.
“Oh, thank God,” Margaret breathed, tears pricking her eyes. “This is the proof we need. This changes everything.”
“We have to tell Dad,” Lily said, her jaw tightening. “We have to tell him as soon as he steps foot in this house.”
“No,” Margaret said, thinking quickly. “If we try to tell him here, Victoria will see us. She has eyes everywhere, and she’s desperate. If she realizes we have this, she might hurt you or Rosie. We need to play along for just a little longer. Tomorrow, when your father’s SUV arrives, we meet him at the gate before he even reaches the front door. We give him the camera, and we let the police handle the rest.”

Lily nodded, her brave facade holding up despite the terrifying reality of their situation. “Okay. For Mom. We protect Dad.”
“For Mom,” Margaret agreed, hugging the young girl tight. “Now, go back to bed. Hide that camera under your mattress. Don't let it out of your sight.”
