CHAPTER 5: The Truth Beneath the Screen

The USB drive felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

For an entire day, I didn’t plug it in.

I just sat in my apartment, staring at it on the table like it might speak first.

Every few minutes, my mind replayed Dr. Carter’s words.

Someone altered the record.

Daniel’s access was logged.

This wasn’t standard procedure.

None of it made sense.

And yet, everything around me had stopped making sense a long time ago.

By nightfall, silence became unbearable.

So I finally stood up, walked to my laptop, and inserted the drive.

The screen flickered.

A single file appeared.

ULTRASOUND_SESSION_1847_ORIGINAL

My hands hesitated.

Then I clicked.

The video opened slowly.

At first, it looked exactly like what I remembered.

The dim room.

The examination bed.

The doctor’s voice explaining the scan.

My own nervous breathing in the background.

Then the ultrasound image appeared.

The same small shape.

The same fragile beginning of life.

My throat tightened.

Until the screen changed.

The doctor in the video suddenly leaned closer.

Just like I remembered.

But this time, the audio shifted.

Faint at first.

Then clearer.

A second recording layered underneath the original sound.

A different voice.

Male.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized it immediately.

Daniel.

But he wasn’t speaking to me.

He was speaking to someone outside the frame.

“I need her to hear it from me,” his voice said.

A pause.

Then another voice responded—calm, clinical.

“Mr. Mitchell, if we delay disclosure, we risk complications in perception of paternity timing.”

“I don’t care about timing,” Daniel said sharply. “I care about certainty.”

My entire body went cold.

I leaned closer to the screen.

The ultrasound image flickered slightly in the video.

Then the doctor in the recording spoke again.

“This scan shows advanced gestational development. If she believes she only just became pregnant, it will create—”

“I said I will handle it,” Daniel interrupted.

Silence in the recording.

Then a final sentence from the unseen medical staff:

“Understood. We will annotate the file accordingly.”

My hands began to shake uncontrollably.

“What is this…” I whispered.

The video continued.

But now I saw something I hadn’t noticed before.

A cursor moving on the hospital system.

Someone editing the record in real time.

Changing timestamps.

Adjusting notes.

Not random errors.

Intentional modifications.

And then—

A final line appeared on the screen.

The one Dr. Carter had shown me.

“Recommend confirmation of partner awareness prior to disclosure.”

Except now I saw what it really was.

Not a medical recommendation.

A directive.

The video ended abruptly.

Black screen.

Silence.

Then—

A second file appeared automatically.

I didn’t click it.

It opened itself.

This one was different.

No ultrasound.

No hospital footage.

Just audio.

And Daniel’s voice again.

But this time, he sounded… different.

Tired.

Not angry.

Not cold.

Tired.

“She thinks I don’t know,” he said.

A pause.

“I need her to believe it came from somewhere else.”

Another voice responded.

“You’re sure this is the only way?”

“Yes,” Daniel said. “If she knows the timing is wrong, she’ll question everything. Including things she shouldn’t.”

A long silence.

Then the other voice asked:

“And the child?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

When he did, his voice was quieter.

“That’s not what matters right now.”

My chest tightened so hard I thought I couldn’t breathe.

I pressed pause.

My hands flew to my mouth.

“No…” I whispered.

This wasn’t just betrayal.

This wasn’t just misunderstanding.

This was something constructed.

Something controlled.

Something engineered.

But why?

Why would Daniel do this?

Why destroy me like this?

Unless—

Unless he believed something too.

Something I still didn’t understand.

My phone suddenly rang.

I almost didn’t answer.

Unknown number again.

But something inside me forced my hand.

I pressed accept.

Silence on the other end.

Then breathing.

Slow.

Familiar.

“Lauren,” Daniel’s voice said.

I froze.

He continued before I could speak.

“Don’t watch any more files.”

My throat went dry.

“How do you know I have them?” I whispered.

A pause.

Then:

“Because I didn’t want you to find them like this.”

My heart pounded violently.

“You lied to me,” I said. “You helped change my medical records.”

“No,” he said quickly. “I tried to protect you.”

“Protect me from what?” I shouted.

Silence.

Longer this time.

Then his voice dropped.

“From what was actually inside that scan.”

My blood turned cold.

“That makes no sense,” I said. “It was a normal pregnancy scan.”

“No,” Daniel said quietly.

And then he said the sentence that shattered everything I thought I knew.

“It wasn’t just a pregnancy.”

My grip tightened on the phone.

“What are you talking about?” I whispered.

His voice shook slightly for the first time.

“You were never only carrying one biological signal,” he said. “The scan picked up something else. Something the hospital tried to suppress before it spread.”

My mind struggled to process it.

“That’s impossible,” I said. “I would know if something was wrong with my body—”

“You wouldn’t,” he interrupted. “That’s the point.”

Silence.

Then he said:

“That’s why I needed to control how you heard it.”

My eyes burned.

“So you manipulated me?” I whispered.

“No,” he said immediately. “I redirected what would have destroyed you.”

I laughed bitterly through tears.

“You destroyed me anyway.”

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew it was true.

I looked at the laptop screen again.

The frozen video still glowing softly.

The truth sitting inside it like a wound that refused to close.

“What did the scan show, Daniel?” I asked quietly.

A long pause.

Then he said:

“Something that shouldn’t exist in a normal pregnancy profile.”

My heart pounded.

“And the hospital covered it up,” I said.

“Yes.”

“And you helped them.”

Another pause.

Then:

“I helped slow it down,” he corrected.

My voice broke.

“Why?”

Silence again.

Then, finally:

“Because I didn’t know how to tell you the truth without losing you.”

I closed my eyes.

Tears falling before I even realized I was crying.

“So everything… the divorce… the accusations… the test…”

“Was all built on something neither of us fully understood,” he said quietly.

I opened my eyes again.

My reflection stared back at me in the dark screen.

A woman standing in the middle of a truth too large to hold.

“What happens now?” I asked.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Now you decide if you still want to know what’s growing inside you.”

A pause.

“And whether you’re ready to see it without anyone controlling the story.”

The line went dead.

I sat there long after the call ended.

The apartment silent again.

But nothing inside me was quiet anymore.

Because for the first time since those two pink lines appeared…

I understood one thing clearly.

The truth had never been hidden from me.

It had been filtered.

And now, finally…

I was about to see it unfiltered.

I looked down at my stomach.

My hand resting there gently.

No longer just fear.

No longer just confusion.

But something heavier.

Something final.

“I need to know,” I whispered.

And somewhere deep inside me—

something seemed to respond.

May you like

Not with words.

But with movement.
