Chapter 5 - The Corporate Siege

By Wednesday, the war had moved from the gossip columns to the corporate boardrooms and federal courts.

Michael’s legal team, led by a ruthless senior partner named Marcus Vance, dropped the encrypted USB drive directly onto the desk of the United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island.

Within twelve hours, federal grand jury subpoenas were issued for Charles and Lydia Mercer. Bank accounts belonging to the Mercer Foundation were frozen. Commercial real-estate holdings were seized pending asset forfeiture hearings.

The retaliation was swift and vicious.

Late Wednesday night, a convoy of three black sedans bypassed the security gates of Michael’s cliffside estate, stopping abruptly at the front entrance.

Inside the main parlor, Michael, Eleanor, and Evelyn were reviewing security protocols when the heavy oak front doors shuddered under a heavy, pounding knock.

Before Evelyn could move, Michael stood up, his jaw set like granite.

“Stay here,” Michael instructed Eleanor.

He walked out into the grand foyer and pulled the heavy doors open.

Standing on the porch was Charles Mercer. The patriarch of the Mercer family looked ten years older than he had three days ago. His tailored suit was rumpled, his hair uncombed, and his eyes burned with desperate fury. Flanking him were two private security contractors in tactical gear.

“Step aside, Michael,” Charles hissed, trying to push his way past into the foyer.

Michael didn't move an inch. He planted his shoulder against the doorframe, blocking the entrance completely.

“You are trespassing on private property, Charles,” Michael said, his voice devoid of any emotion. “And given that federal marshals are likely looking for you right now, I suggest you get back into your car.”

“You think you’ve won, you arrogant little tech boy?” Charles sneered, his voice rising in panic. “You’ve declared war on people who control the judges, the police, and half the state legislature! Drop the federal filings, or I swear to God, I will ensure Eleanor and her brats are hunted down and stripped of every legal right they possess!”

A cold, deadly calm settled over Michael. He took one slow step forward, towering over the older man.

“If you ever speak of Eleanor or her daughters again,” Michael whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made the private security contractors instinctively place their hands near their holsters, “I won't let the federal government handle you. I will dismantle everything your family built down to the last brick and leave you sleeping on a park bench.”

Charles swallowed hard, stepping back from the terrifying intensity radiating from the billionaire.

“You’re making a catastrophic mistake, Anders,” Charles muttered, turning on his heel and marching back toward the sedans.

The vehicles tore down the private driveway, their tires spitting gravel against the stone walls.

Michael closed the front doors, locked the heavy deadbolt, and stood in the silent foyer for a long moment, closing his eyes as he exhaled a slow, controlled breath.

When he returned to the parlor, Eleanor was standing by the fireplace, her face pale.

“They were here, weren't they?” she asked.

“Charles,” Michael said, walking over to her. He reached out, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “He made threats. He’s terrified.”

“He’ll do something desperate,” Eleanor said, her voice shaking. “Men like Charles Mercer don't go down quietly.”

“Neither do I,” Michael replied softly. “Neither do I.”
