Chapter 8 - The First Sunrise

Six months later.
The spring sun rose over Lake Michigan, painting the water in brilliant strokes of gold, amber, and pale blue. The storm clouds of the past had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, clean morning that smelled of blooming lilacs and fresh coffee.
Inside the nursery of the Highland Park estate—redecorated with bright colors, warm wooden bookshelves, and soft rugs—Sofia sat cross-legged on the floor, coloring a picture of a superhero with a red cape and a waitress apron.
Lena stood by the tall window, watching the waves roll onto the shore.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, and a warm chin rested gently on her shoulder.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Kane,” Dominic murmured, pressing a soft kiss against the side of her neck.
Lena smiled, leaning back against his chest. Her shoulder had healed completely, leaving only a faint, silvery scar beneath her blouse—a badge of honor she would wear for the rest of her life.
“I was just thinking,” Lena said softly, turning in his arms to face him. “About how crazy it is that a spilled cup of coffee and a late bus could change my entire life.”
“It wasn’t luck,” Dominic said, his gray eyes shining with profound, unshakeable devotion. “It was fate. You were always meant to find your way to us.”
Down the hall, patter of small feet echoed across the hardwood floor.
The door swung open, and Sofia burst into the room, holding up her coloring book with a proud, gap-toothed grin. “Look, Mommy! Look what I drew for you!”
Lena knelt down, taking the drawing in her hands, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep and pure it felt like grace.

Dominic knelt beside them, wrapping one arm around his daughter and the other around the woman who had walked into a restaurant as a stranger and become the heart of his entire empire.
The sun climbed higher over the lake, casting a golden, unbroken pathway across the water—a future that belonged to all of them, safe, protected, and finally, completely at peace.
