Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Summit

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Kang Tower was a cathedral of glass, polished chrome, and intimidation.

At ten o'clock sharp, the heavy glass doors swung open.

The three corrupt board members—Vance, Sterling, and Miller—sat at the far end of the massive conference table, flanked by their corporate attorneys and public relations handlers. They looked confident, smug, and entirely unprepared for what was about to walk through the door.

At the head of the table sat James Kang.

He didn't wear a suit jacket; he wore a dark charcoal shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking less like a compromised CEO and more like an executioner attending an administrative hearing.

"Gentlemen," James said, his voice cutting through the morning light pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. "I understand you called an emergency vote."

Vance, a silver-haired corporate raider with expensive teeth and dead eyes, leaned back in his leather chair. "We did, James. Given the recent security breach involving your household staff and the missing financial records from Lawrence Fenn's office, the board has lost confidence in your ability to manage the logistics division. We are moving for an immediate, emergency vote to dissolve the northern shipping lanes and transfer assets to Whitmore Holdings."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the legal team behind them.

James didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply reached out and tapped a single key on the conference room's main projector remote.

The massive wall screen behind the board lit up.

It didn't display corporate earnings reports. It displayed a detailed, colour-coded flowchart linking Whitmore Holdings directly to Vance, Sterling, and Miller’s offshore accounts in the Caymans, complete with timestamped wire receipts, encrypted chat logs, and signed authorizations for the fraudulent maintenance bids on Pier 14.

The room went dead silent.

Vance’s face drained of color. "What... what is this? This is fabricated—"

"It's forensic accounting, Mr. Vance," a clear, calm voice rang out from the double doors at the back of the boardroom.

All heads turned.

Maya Reeves walked down the center aisle of the boardroom. She was no longer wearing the grey polyester cleaning uniform of Meridian Services. She wore a sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit, her hair pinned back with elegant precision, her posture radiating absolute, unshakeable authority.

She stopped beside James’s chair and placed a thick leather-bound dossier on the polished mahogany table.

"My name is Maya Reeves," she said, her voice echoing clearly across the silent room. "Former lead forensic auditor at Halloran Whitmore. And currently, Chief Financial Investigator for Kang Logistics."

Sterling stammered, standing up from his chair. "You—you're a fugitive! There's an active federal warrant—"

"A warrant that was formally quashed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois thirty minutes ago," James said smoothly, standing up beside Maya. He pressed a button on his phone, and the speakerphone chimed, connecting to the federal prosecutor's office on the record.

"This is Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayes," a crisp voice broadcasted through the boardroom sound system. "We are currently executing federal search warrants at the primary offices of Whitmore Holdings in Seattle and Chicago. Mr. Vance, Mr. Sterling, and Mr. Miller—you are advised to remain seated. Federal marshals are securing the perimeter of this building as we speak."

The sound of heavy, disciplined boots echoing outside the glass doors of the boardroom confirmed the attorney's words.

Vance slumped back into his chair, his hands trembling as he stared at the screen showing his offshore accounts. The trap had sprung, and there was no way out.
