Three months later, the criminal trial of State v. Joel and Dakota Sinclair came to an abrupt end.
Faced with overwhelming forensic evidence, audio recordings, and the testimony of bank officials, Joel pleaded guilty to two felony counts of Grand Larceny, Elder Abuse, and Fraud. He was sentenced to twelve years in state prison without the possibility of early parole.
Dakota, who tried to shift total blame onto her husband, was convicted of conspiracy, perjury, and felony endangerment, receiving a seven-year sentence.
On the day of their final sentencing, Callie attended the hearing alone. She sat in the back row of the gallery, wearing a simple black dress.
As Joel was led away in his orange jumpsuit, he turned his head and looked at her through the glass partition.
His face was gaunt, his swagger entirely gone. For a second, his eyes met Callie’s. He looked for anger, triumph, or hatred in her gaze.
Instead, he found only a quiet, impenetrable pity.
