Chapter 8 - The Queen on the Board

The sun began to rise over Lake Michigan, casting a pale, golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Marchetti estate.

In the private study, Dante stood before a massive wall map of Chicago, pinning red markers across the north side territory. Sitting on the leather sofa beside the fire was Elena, holding a warm cup of coffee, her blood-stained clothes replaced by a clean white sweater provided by the estate staff.

Brutus lay on a thick velvet rug at her feet, his tail giving a lazy wag every time she nudged him with her shoe.

The study door opened, and Luca—Dante’s chief lieutenant—stepped inside, holding a thick leather folder.

"Boss," Luca said, his eyes darting nervously toward Elena before focusing on Dante. "We swept the bar on Halsted. The cops showed up, but our legal team took care of it. Closed the place down for 'renovations.' No names were leaked."

"Good," Dante said. "What about Volkov?"

"He's consolidating his crews," Luca reported, his voice grim. "He thinks you're weak because you haven't struck back yet. He’s calling a meeting of the six city families tonight at the Grand Hotel. He plans to declare war on the Marchetti family and take the docks officially."

Dante leaned against his desk, crossing his arms. "Let him call the meeting."

"Boss?" Luca blinked in surprise. "If you don't show up, the other families will side with him out of fear!"

"Oh, I'm showing up," Dante said, a dark, lethal smile spreading across his face. He turned his gaze slowly toward Elena. "And I'm bringing my new Chief Medical Officer with me."

Elena set her coffee cup down. "I'm not a mobster, Marchetti. I saved your dog. I’m not joining your war."

"You don't have to fight, Dr. Rostova," Dante said, walking over to stand in front of her. "Volkov thinks you died in Baltimore three years ago. He thinks he erased your husband's evidence."

Dante pulled a key from his pocket and threw it onto the table in front of her.

"Inside my private vault in Zurich is a copy of the original grand jury files your husband sent to my father before he was killed," Dante said softly. "Your husband didn't just go to the feds, Elena. He knew the feds were dirty, so he sent a backup copy to us."

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. She stood up, her eyes wide with shock. "You... you have David's files?"

"I have the names, the bank accounts, the shell companies, and the tapes," Dante said. "Everything your husband died to protect."

He held out his hand toward her.

"Tonight, Volkov tries to take my city," Dante said, his voice ringing with absolute, undisputed authority. "Help me put him in the ground. Not as a waitress hiding behind a bar. But as the woman who finishes what her husband started."

Elena looked down at Dante’s open hand. She looked at Brutus, who let out a soft, supportive huff from the floor.

Three years of running. Three years of hiding in dark apartments, serving draft beers, and waiting for a bullet in the dark.

She was tired of running.

Elena reached out her hand, her small fingers wrapping firmly around Dante Marchetti’s palm, her dark eyes flashing with the cold, unstoppable fire of a woman who had finally found her vengeance.

"Get me a suit," Elena said quietly. "We have a meeting to attend."

And in that quiet morning light, the ghost of Halsted Street vanished—and the most dangerous woman in Chicago was born.
