Chapter 6 - The Cornered Predator

While peace began to settle over my estate, chaos reigned inside the penthouse apartment on Fifth Avenue.
Isabella Romano paced back and forth across the imported Italian marble floor, her phone pressed tightly to her ear, screaming into the receiver.
“What do you mean the accounts are frozen?!” Isabella shrieked, her voice echoing off the minimalist art deco walls. “Talk to Judge Vance! Remind him who pays for his reelection campaign!”
“Ms. Romano, with all due respect,” a terrified lawyer’s voice crackled through the speaker, “Judge Vance recused himself this morning. The federal banking commission has seized all primary liquidity. Your father’s corporate assets are under criminal investigation for money laundering. We can’t even pay our retainer!”
Isabella slammed her thumb down on the red end-call button, throwing her phone against the wall where it shattered into a dozen pieces.
“Ungrateful, pathetic cowards!” she screamed, kicking a designer end table.
Her mother, Elena Romano, sat regally on a velvet sofa nearby, nursing a glass of vodka. Elena’s face was a mask of cold, calculated fury. For thirty years, the Romano women had ruled New York society through fear, manipulation, and deep pockets. To be brought down by a lowly maid and an uncooperative fiancé was an insult that demanded absolute blood.
“Stop screaming, Isabella,” Elena commanded smoothly, taking a sip of vodka. “Crying and throwing tantrums won't get our money back.”
“Then what will, Mother?!” Isabella snapped, her mascara smudged, her hair wild. “We’re ruined! Every socialite we invited to the wedding has blocked our numbers! The tabloids are calling us monsters! Alessandro Moreno destroyed us!”
“Alessandro is arrogant, but he’s predictable,” Elena said, her eyes narrowing into cold, calculating slits. “He thinks he’s won because he has security footage and frozen bank accounts. But he’s missing one vital detail.”
Isabella stopped pacing, frowning. “What detail?”
“He cares about his reputation,” Elena smiled darkly. “And he cares about that little maid and her bastard child. If we can’t beat him in the courts, we’ll destroy him in the court of public opinion. We’ll leak a story claiming that Sophia seduced him, that she orchestrated an elaborate scheme to sabotage the wedding from the inside, and that Alessandro was complicit in financial embezzlement through his own household payroll.”

Isabella’s eyes widened, a wicked, desperate grin spreading across her face. “Yes... yes! We’ll paint ourselves as the victims of a manipulative gold-digging servant and her corrupt boss!”
“Exactly,” Elena purred, standing up and smoothing her designer skirt. “Fetch my tablet. It’s time to call our favorite tabloid columnist.”
