Chapter 5 - The Shadow Fight

The night was a blur of frantic preparation and high-stakes maneuvering. We didn't drive; we took the subway, switching lines three times, moving through the veins of the city like ghosts.

David’s apartment was a bunker of hard drives and stacks of paper. When we arrived, he didn't ask questions. He took one look at Sarah, then at me, and his face shifted into a look of grim determination.

"I thought you were in the ground, Sarah," he said, ushering us inside.

"I was," she replied, laying the flash drive on his desk. "But I’m back."

As David began to decrypt the files, the scope of the conspiracy became clear. It wasn't just about money. It was about control—using the firm’s assets to influence zoning laws, hospital contracts, and city projects. They had used Sarah’s death as a leverage point to consolidate power.

Suddenly, the lights in the apartment flickered and died. A chilling silence filled the room.

"They're here," David whispered, pulling a weapon from his desk drawer.

Footsteps pounded in the hallway. We moved to the back exit, the fire escape. I held Ethan, Sarah gripped my hand, and we stepped out into the biting night air of the city. We were pursued, not by law enforcement, but by the shadows of our own former lives.

We climbed down, the iron of the fire escape groaning. As we hit the alley, a car screeched around the corner, headlights cutting through the darkness like twin blades.

"Go!" Sarah yelled, pushing us toward the mouth of the alley. She turned back, pulling a small flare gun from her coat pocket—something she must have scavenged. She fired it into the car’s windshield, a blinding burst of red that sent the driver swerving into a dumpster.

We scrambled into the chaos of the city streets, disappearing into the late-night crowd of a transit hub. We were invisible, just another group of people lost in the noise of New York.
