CHAPTER 2: THE CLEANING WOMAN WHO DEFIED THE DOCTORS

"You need to call the doctors back."
Maria's voice echoed through the silent room.
Rafael stared at her as if she had lost her mind.
"What are you talking about?"
"The baby."
His face darkened.
"My son is dead."
Maria shook her head.
"No."
The word came with such certainty that Rafael felt a strange chill.
She leaned over the crib again.
Carefully.
Slowly.
Almost reverently.
Years of experience had taught her to trust her instincts.
And her instincts had never felt stronger.
"I felt something."
Rafael's heart pounded.
"What did you feel?"
"A movement."
The billionaire looked toward the tiny body.
Nothing moved.
Nothing breathed.
The baby remained still beneath the blanket.
Rafael wanted to believe her.
God, he wanted to.
But hope was dangerous.
Hope could destroy what little strength he had left.
"The doctors checked him."
"They can make mistakes."
"Not all of them."
Maria remained silent.
Then she carefully placed two fingers against the baby's neck.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Nothing.
Then—
A faint flutter.
So weak it was almost impossible to detect.
Maria's eyes widened.
"There."
"What?"
"There!"
Rafael rushed forward.
Maria grabbed his wrist.
"Call them."
For a moment neither moved.
Then Rafael slammed the emergency button beside the bed.
Within seconds nurses rushed inside.
A doctor followed.
Dr. Harrison.
His face immediately hardened.
"Mr. Mendoza, what's wrong?"
Rafael pointed at the crib.
"Check him again."
The doctor looked confused.
"We already—"
"CHECK HIM AGAIN!"
The room froze.
Nobody had ever heard the billionaire scream like that.
Dr. Harrison reluctantly approached.
He examined the infant.
Listened for a heartbeat.
Checked for breathing.
Then frowned.
Something wasn't right.
He listened again.
Longer this time.
His expression slowly changed.
"What is it?" Rafael demanded.
The doctor looked up.
Pale.
Shocked.
Impossible.
That was the only word running through his mind.
Because somehow...
There was a heartbeat.
Weak.
Dangerously weak.
But there.
The room erupted into chaos.
"NICU team now!"
"Prepare oxygen!"
"Move!"
Nurses ran.
Machines rolled in.
Specialists rushed through the doorway.
Rafael stood frozen.
Unable to process what he was hearing.
His son was alive.
Alive.
Tears flooded his eyes.
For the first time all day, hope returned.
But the battle had only begun.
The baby was transferred to intensive care.
Every specialist in the hospital became involved.
Tests were repeated.
Scans performed.
Blood samples analyzed.
No one could explain what happened.
No one.
A baby declared dead.
Then alive.
The story spread through the hospital like wildfire.
Some called it a miracle.
Others called it a medical anomaly.
But Maria wasn't satisfied.
Something bothered her.
The baby hadn't simply recovered.
Something else was wrong.
Very wrong.
Late that night she overheard two doctors talking near a supply room.
They didn't know she was nearby.
"You should destroy the original report."
Maria froze.
"What if someone finds out?"
"They won't."
The second doctor sounded nervous.
"What about Mendoza?"
"He doesn't need to know."
Maria's pulse quickened.
Destroy what report?
What were they hiding?
The conversation stopped as footsteps approached.
Maria quickly moved away before being seen.
But now she knew one thing.
The doctors were keeping secrets.
And somehow those secrets involved the baby.
The following morning Rafael refused to leave the intensive care unit.
His son remained unconscious.
Tiny.
Fragile.
Connected to countless machines.
Every beep made Rafael anxious.
Every minute felt like torture.
Then Maria appeared at the doorway.
The billionaire looked up.
For the first time since meeting her, he smiled.
A small smile.
But genuine.
"You saved him."
Maria shook her head.
"No."
"Yes."
"You saved him."
Rafael frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Maria looked toward the sleeping baby.
"If you hadn't stayed with him, nobody would've checked again."
For a moment neither spoke.
Then Maria hesitated.
"There is something else."
Rafael immediately noticed the concern in her eyes.
"What?"
"I think someone is lying."
The room grew quiet.
"What are you talking about?"
Maria took a deep breath.
Then told him everything she had overheard.
The hidden conversation.
The destroyed report.
The fear in the doctors' voices.
As she spoke, Rafael's expression darkened.
When she finished, he immediately called his head of security.
"Lock down every medical record related to my son."
The man nodded.
"Yes, sir."
"No files disappear."
"No reports are altered."
"No one leaves."
The order spread through the hospital within minutes.
Doctors panicked.
Administrators became nervous.
Because buried somewhere inside the hospital database was a document nobody wanted Rafael Mendoza to see.
A document that had nothing to do with his son's condition.
And everything to do with his wife's death.
That evening Rafael's private investigators uncovered the hidden file.
A file someone had tried desperately to erase.
The report contained one sentence highlighted in red.
When Rafael read it, his blood turned cold.
"Evidence suggests medication administered before delivery was unauthorized."
His hands began shaking.
Unauthorized medication.
His wife hadn't simply died during childbirth.
Someone had given her something.
Something she wasn't supposed to receive.
Something that may have killed her.
Rafael looked toward the intensive care unit.
Toward his son.
Toward the child who had somehow survived.
Then he looked back at the report.
For the first time, grief was replaced by something else.
Something darker.
Someone inside the hospital knew the truth.
Someone had tried to cover it up.
And Rafael Mendoza had just declared war.
May you like
But he had no idea that the person responsible was much closer than anyone imagined.
