PART 2: THE BIRTHDAY PARTY FROM HELL

The longest twenty minutes of my life began after I hung up the phone.

Upstairs, I could hear footsteps.

Cabinet doors opening.

Drawers slamming shut.

Panic.

Pure panic.

Ryan and Jessica were scrambling.

Trying to think of excuses.

Trying to erase what I had already seen.

Too late.

I sat quietly at the kitchen table.

Waiting.

The decorations for Emily's birthday party still sat unopened beside me.

Pink balloons.

Gift bags.

A banner that read:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EMILY!

The irony almost made me laugh.

A birthday celebration.

In a house where betrayal was dripping from the walls.

Then Ryan came downstairs.

Fresh clothes.

Wet hair.

Fake confidence.

The performance had begun.

"Listen."

I didn't look at him.

"There's nothing to listen to."

"It isn't what it looked like."

That finally made me laugh.

A sharp laugh.

Cold.

Dangerous.

Ryan's face tightened.

"Jessica was upset."

I looked at him.

"Is that why she was in your bathtub?"

He immediately looked away.

Exactly.

No answer.

Because there wasn't one.

For several minutes neither of us spoke.

Then Jessica slowly came downstairs.

Her eyes were swollen from crying.

She couldn't even look at me.

The same woman who had called me her best friend for fifteen years.

The same woman who had slept in my guest room.

Shared holidays with us.

Celebrated birthdays with us.

Now she stood there like a stranger.

And somehow that hurt even more than Ryan.

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone froze.

Emily.

She had arrived.

Earlier than expected.

The moment she stepped inside, she knew something was wrong.

Her eyes moved between me.

Ryan.

Jessica.

The tension in the room was impossible to miss.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

She looked at me.

Then at Jessica.

Then at Ryan.

Slowly her expression changed.

Confusion.

Concern.

Fear.

"What's going on?"

Still nobody spoke.

Finally she looked directly at her husband.

"Ryan?"

His face turned pale.

And that was all it took.

I watched realization spread across my sister's face.

Like a storm rolling across the ocean.

She didn't know exactly what had happened.

But she knew it was bad.

Very bad.

Then she noticed something.

Jessica's purse.

Sitting near the stairs.

Not by the front door.

Upstairs.

The master bedroom.

The color drained from her face.

"No."

Ryan immediately stepped forward.

"Emily—"

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"No."

For several seconds the room became completely silent.

Then she whispered the question nobody wanted to answer.

"How long?"

Jessica burst into tears.

And that was answer enough.

Emily staggered backward.

As though someone had punched her.

I moved toward her immediately.

But she raised her hand.

She wasn't crying.

Not yet.

Somehow that was worse.

Then the front door opened again.

Ryan's brother Michael entered.

The moment he saw everyone's faces, he knew.

"What happened?"

Nobody answered.

Michael looked at Ryan.

Then at Jessica.

Then back at me.

The truth clicked instantly.

His jaw tightened.

"What did you do?"

Ryan lowered his head.

Michael closed his eyes.

Disappointment washed across his face.

"Tell me I’m wrong."

Ryan said nothing.

Michael looked sick.

Because unlike everyone else in the room...

Michael knew something we didn't.

And judging by his expression...

It was much worse than an affair.

Emily noticed immediately.

"What?"

Michael looked away.

"Nothing."

"What?"

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Michael finally spoke.

And the words that came out changed everything.

"Ryan, tell her about the money."

The room froze.

Ryan's head snapped up.

"Don't."

Michael ignored him.

"Tell your wife where her inheritance went."

My stomach dropped.

Inheritance?

Emily stared at her husband.

"What is he talking about?"

Ryan looked trapped.

Cornered.

Finished.

Michael's voice grew colder.

"Tell her."

Emily's face turned white.

"What inheritance?"

I suddenly remembered.

Two years earlier, our grandmother had passed away.

Emily had inherited nearly $400,000.

Money she planned to use to start a business.

Money she thought was safely invested.

Money Ryan handled because he worked in finance.

Ryan swallowed hard.

Then looked at the floor.

And in that moment...

Emily already knew.

"No."

Her voice shook.

"No."

Ryan finally whispered:

"It's gone."

The room exploded.

"GONE?"

Emily screamed so loudly that even I jumped.

Ryan tried speaking.

Tried explaining.

But the words only made things worse.

The money wasn't invested.

The money wasn't protected.

The money wasn't growing.

It was gone.

Spent.

Over three years.

Secret accounts.

Luxury trips.

Gambling debts.

Credit cards.

And according to Michael...

Large amounts of it had been spent on Jessica.

The room became silent.

The affair was one thing.

The betrayal was one thing.

But stealing from his own wife?

Destroying her future?

That was something else entirely.

Emily finally broke.

Tears poured down her face.

Years of trust shattered in seconds.

Jessica tried apologizing.

Emily turned toward her.

The look in her eyes made Jessica step backward.

"You were my family."

Jessica began sobbing.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"No, you're sorry you got caught."

Neither Ryan nor Jessica could argue.

Because it was true.

Every word.

Then something happened nobody expected.

Michael reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

"What is that?" I asked.

Michael looked directly at Ryan.

"It's the rest of the truth."

Ryan's face instantly lost all color.

Because whatever was inside that folder...

He clearly never wanted anyone to see it.

May you like

And when Emily opened it...

The nightmare was about to get even worse.
