Part 2: The Impossible Result

Melissa wouldn't look at me.
Not in the hallway.
Not in the elevator.
Not during the drive home.
She stared out the passenger window with tears running silently down her cheeks.
"Melissa," I said softly.
"What did they tell you?"
Nothing.
For nearly twenty minutes she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"The baby is healthy."
I blinked.
"What?"
"The baby is perfectly healthy."
Confusion flooded me.
"Then why did they throw me out?"
Her hands trembled.
"Because they found something else."
I felt my chest tighten.
"What?"
Melissa slowly pulled an envelope from her purse.
Inside was a report.
A report she could barely bring herself to touch.
I read the first line.
Then read it again.
Then a third time.
The words made no sense.
According to the ultrasound...
Melissa's body showed signs of a previous pregnancy.
Not years ago.
Not before we met.
Recently.
Within the last eighteen months.
I stared at the paper.
"This has to be wrong."
"I know."
"But they repeated the scan."
The room spun.
The doctor had believed Melissa had already carried a child before.
Recently.
A child that didn't exist.
A child neither of us knew about.
"Melissa..."
"I never had another baby."
"I know."
"Then what did they see?"
She looked at me.
Terrified.
"That's what scares me."
Three days later Dr. Harris called.
His voice sounded urgent.
"We need you both to come back immediately."
"Why?"
There was a long pause.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"We know what the ultrasound found."
May you like
"And it's not what we thought."
