PART 2: The Recording They Never Knew Existed

The sound of the shattered glass echoed through the mansion.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Elena stood frozen outside the pantry, her heart pounding so violently she thought it might give her away.
Inside, the conversation stopped instantly.
Then came footsteps.
Approaching.
Fast.
Elena's survival instincts took over.
Without thinking, she turned and hurried back toward the staircase.
By the time Richard opened the pantry door, she was already halfway upstairs.
She forced herself not to run.
Running would make them suspicious.
Running would tell them she had heard everything.
And now she understood something terrifying:
If they knew she knew...
she might not survive the pregnancy.
That night Elena locked herself inside her bedroom.
She sat on the floor beside the bed with both hands covering her mouth.
The tears wouldn't stop.
Her husband wanted her gone.
Her mother-in-law wanted her dead.
And Sophia...
Sophia was helping them.
Every smile.
Every vitamin.
Every reassuring word.
All of it had been a lie.
Elena placed a trembling hand on her stomach.
The baby kicked.
At least that's what she thought.
A tiny movement beneath her skin.
A reminder that she wasn't alone.
"I'll protect you," she whispered.
"No matter what."
For the first time in months, she stopped thinking like a wife.
She started thinking like a mother.
And mothers become dangerous when their children are threatened.
The next morning, she acted as if nothing had happened.
She smiled.
She thanked Bernice for breakfast.
She kissed Richard goodbye.
She even apologized for dropping the glass.
And all three of them seemed relieved.
Because they believed their secret was safe.
They had no idea Elena had begun preparing for war.
Over the next several weeks, she became observant.
Very observant.
She noticed things she had ignored before.
Richard was sleeping in the guest room more often.
Sophia was constantly texting him.
Bernice insisted on controlling every medication Elena took.
Most disturbing of all...
every time Elena visited her doctor alone, someone from Richard's office somehow knew exactly what had been discussed.
Someone was watching her.
Someone was reporting back.
One afternoon she decided to test a theory.
At lunch, she casually mentioned she was considering changing lawyers.
Nothing serious.
Just a harmless comment.
Less than three hours later, Richard stormed into her study.
"Why would you change attorneys?"
Elena's stomach tightened.
She had her answer.
Someone was spying on her.
That evening she called the only person she still trusted.
Nathan Brooks.
Her father's former attorney.
The man who had helped build the Vance business empire.
When she told him everything, there was a long silence.
Then he spoke.
"Elena."
"Yes?"
"Do not eat anything they prepare."
Her blood ran cold.
"What?"
"I'm serious."
"Until we know exactly what's happening, trust nobody."
The next day Nathan arranged for a private investigator.
And what they discovered was worse than Elena imagined.
Photographs.
Messages.
Hotel receipts.
Secret meetings.
Richard and Sophia had been having an affair for nearly two years.
Almost the entire marriage.
But that wasn't the worst part.
The investigator uncovered financial records.
Large transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Documents showing Richard had quietly moved company funds through shell corporations.
Millions of dollars.
Millions.
Nathan stared at the evidence.
Then looked at Elena.
"They're not just trying to inherit your money."
"They're already stealing it."
For the first time, Elena realized this wasn't merely betrayal.
It was a conspiracy.
A carefully planned takeover.
And she was standing directly in the way.
Nathan immediately urged her to leave the mansion.
But Elena refused.
"If I leave now, they'll know I'm onto them."
"So what are you going to do?"
Elena looked down at her phone.
Then opened a hidden folder.
Inside was something she hadn't told anyone about.
The night she overheard the pantry conversation...
she had accidentally activated the voice recorder on her phone.
She thought the recording had been ruined when she dropped the glass.
But after listening to it later, she discovered something incredible.
The entire conversation was there.
Every word.
Every threat.
Every plan.
Including Bernice saying:
"If Elena dies after the birth, everything belongs to Richard."
Nathan listened to the audio twice.
Then a third time.
When it ended, he slowly removed his glasses.
"My God."
"We can destroy them."
Elena nodded.
For the first time in months, she felt hope.
But hope lasted only three days.
Because during a routine pregnancy examination, the doctor discovered something unexpected.
Something nobody had seen before.
A second heartbeat.
The room fell silent.
The technician checked the monitor again.
Then called for another physician.
Minutes later the specialist entered.
He stared at the screen.
Then looked directly at Elena.
"Mrs. Vance..."
His expression changed.
"What is it?" Elena asked.
The doctor swallowed.
"It appears you aren't carrying one baby."
Elena blinked.
"What?"
The doctor pointed toward the monitor.
"There are two."
Twins.
At that exact moment, Elena realized the danger had just doubled.
Because if Richard wanted her inheritance before...
what would he do now that there were two heirs?
And somewhere inside the mansion...
Sophia had already begun preparing a final plan.
May you like
One that Elena would never see coming.
