Chapter 2 - The Cold Farewell

The heavy mahogany front door clicked shut, the sound echoing through the cavernous marble foyer of the DeSantis estate like a gun cocking in a silent room.

Lorenzo stepped inside, unbuttoning his dark suit jacket. He carried himself with the effortless authority of a man who owned every square foot of the city. His dark hair was slightly messy, his jaw sharp, his dark eyes carrying the tired arrogance of a king returning to his castle.

"Elena," Lorenzo called out, his deep voice carrying through the hall. "Tell Emily I'm home early. We'll have dinner on the patio."

Elena stood near the archway, her hands trembling as she tucked the ultrasound photo deep into her apron pocket. She looked at Lorenzo not with the usual reverence of a long-time housekeeper, but with a quiet, burning disgust.

"She's in the parlor, Mr. DeSantis," Elena said quietly. "She's been waiting for you."

Lorenzo smirked, slipping his gold watch off his wrist and placing it on the entry table. "Good. I have a long night ahead."

He turned the corner into the grand parlor.

I was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the sprawling, manicured gardens I had spent two years tending. My suitcase sat beside the velvet sofa, pristine and packed.

Lorenzo paused, his dark eyebrows pulling together in slight confusion. "Emily? What's the bag for? Are we going somewhere?"

I turned around slowly. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. The woman who used to tremble whenever his dark mood shifted was gone, replaced by a cold, hollow stranger.

"No, Lorenzo," I said, my voice as smooth and flat as ice. "You're staying. I'm leaving."

A faint, amused smile touched his lips. He thought it was a joke. He took two steps toward me, reaching out a hand. "Did I miss an anniversary dinner? Look, Emily, I know I've been busy with the shipping terminals, but—"

"I was at the penthouse today at 1:15 PM," I interrupted softly.

Lorenzo froze mid-step. The air in the room instantly turned arctic.

"I brought you a gift," I continued, taking a slow step toward him. "I wore the blue dress you bought me in Amalfi. I rode your private elevator up to the forty-third floor. And I stood right outside your open office door."

The color slowly drained from Lorenzo's bronzed face. For the first time in the five years I had known him, the East Coast's most feared mafia boss looked entirely struck dumb.

"Emily..." he rasped, his voice dropping an octave. "It's not what you think. Vanessa was just—"

"You told her I was a respectable face for the family," I said, staring directly into his dark eyes. "You said I smile at charity galas, ask no questions, and never look behind the curtain. You called me the perfect mafia wife."

Lorenzo took a sudden, aggressive step forward, his hands reaching to grab my shoulders. "Emily, listen to me! You don't understand how the business works! That was just talk! She means nothing to me!"

"Don't touch me," I whispered.

The absolute, lethal stillness in my voice stopped him dead in his tracks. He stared at me, his chest heaving, his dark eyes searching my face for the sweet, submissive woman he had married.

He didn't find her.

I reached up to my left hand, unclasped the five-carat diamond ring that had bound me to him for two years, and let it drop onto the glass coffee table between us. The heavy ring clinked loudly against the glass.

Beside it, I placed a thick white envelope.

"What is that?" Lorenzo demanded, his voice turning dangerous, the mob boss finally emerging from behind the husband's mask.

"Divorce petition," I replied. "Every joint account has been split down the exact middle as outlined in our prenuptial agreement. My belongings are packed. My lawyer will handle the rest."

Lorenzo let out a dark, bitter laugh, stepping closer until he towered over me. "Divorce? You think you can just hand me a piece of paper and walk away from a DeSantis? Nobody leaves me, Emily. You belong to this family."

"I belonged to a man I thought loved me," I said, reaching down to grab the handle of my suitcase. "That man doesn't exist. You're just a dictator in an expensive suit."

"If you step out that door," Lorenzo growled, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin, "I will hunt down every asset you try to touch. I will make sure you don't have a single dollar to your name."

I looked at him, feeling nothing but profound pity.

"You already took everything that mattered, Lorenzo," I said quietly, looking down at my flat stomach beneath the blue dress. "There's nothing left for you to take."

I walked past him. He reached out to grab my arm, but Elena stepped into the hallway, standing firmly between him and the door, her chin held high.

May you like

"Let her go, Lorenzo," Elena said sternly, using his first name for the first time in twenty years. "You've done enough damage for one lifetime."

Lorenzo stood frozen in the foyer as the front door swung open. Rain had begun to fall over the estate. I didn't look back as I stepped into the waiting black sedan, leaving the DeSantis empire—and its ruthless king—behind in the dark.
