PART 2: THE SECRET IN THE MEDICAL FILE

The room fell silent.
Daniel stood beside my hospital bed holding divorce papers.
Dr. Lawson stood near the door.
And suddenly, the atmosphere had changed.
The transplant surgeon looked directly at my husband.
"You chose today?"
Daniel frowned.
"I'm sorry?"
Dr. Lawson glanced at the papers.
Then at me.
Then back at Daniel.
"Two days after she donated a kidney to your mother?"
Daniel shifted uncomfortably.
"This is a private family matter."
The doctor's jaw tightened.
"No."
he said quietly.
"It stopped being private when your wife risked her life to save another human being."
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel straightened his shoulders.
"With respect, doctor, my marriage is none of your concern."
Dr. Lawson stared at him.
For several seconds.
Long enough to make Daniel visibly uncomfortable.
Then the surgeon said something unexpected.
"You're right."
Daniel looked relieved.
But Dr. Lawson wasn't finished.
"Your marriage isn't my concern."
He paused.
"The fraud investigation is."
Every muscle in Daniel's body froze.
"What?"
The doctor slowly opened a folder he was carrying.
I frowned.
Fraud?
What fraud?
Daniel's face suddenly lost color.
Just slightly.
But enough for Dr. Lawson to notice.
Enough for me to notice.
The surgeon placed the folder on a nearby table.
"Interesting reaction."
Daniel swallowed.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
Dr. Lawson calmly removed several documents.
"I think you do."
The room became painfully quiet.
My heart monitor continued beeping steadily.
The sound seemed louder now.
Daniel glanced toward the door.
Then toward the paperwork.
Then toward me.
As if calculating something.
As if searching for an escape.
Dr. Lawson continued.
"Before approving any transplant, we conduct extensive family interviews."
I nodded weakly.
That was true.
There had been months of evaluations.
Psychological reviews.
Financial reviews.
Medical reviews.
The process had been exhaustive.
Daniel looked increasingly nervous.
"What does that have to do with anything?"
The doctor opened another document.
"During that process, some inconsistencies appeared."
My stomach tightened.
"What inconsistencies?"
I asked.
The doctor looked at me sympathetically.
Then he turned back toward Daniel.
"The information regarding your mother's financial situation."
Daniel's face went pale.
Very pale.
And suddenly I knew.
There was something he didn't want discussed.
Something important.
The surgeon continued carefully.
"As part of the transplant evaluation, your wife repeatedly stated she was donating because your mother couldn't afford long-term treatment."
I nodded.
That had been true.
Or so I thought.
Dialysis costs were overwhelming.
Medical debt was crushing the family.
At least that was what Daniel had told me.
For over a year.
Dr. Lawson opened another file.
"However, several weeks ago, hospital auditors discovered something unusual."
Daniel took a step backward.
Just one step.
But nobody missed it.
The doctor placed a financial report on the table.
"Your mother has a trust fund."
Silence.
I stared.
"What?"
Dr. Lawson nodded.
"A substantial trust fund."
My brain struggled to process the words.
No.
That wasn't possible.
Daniel had repeatedly told me his mother was nearly bankrupt.
He'd shown me overdue bills.
Collection notices.
Financial statements.
Or at least what I believed were financial statements.
The surgeon continued.
"The trust contains over three million dollars."
The room spun.
Three million.
Three million dollars.
My hands began trembling.
"What?"
Daniel looked trapped.
Cornered.
Caught.
The doctor opened another document.
"The trust could have paid for years of treatment."
I stared at my husband.
The man I thought I knew.
The man I had trusted completely.
The man I had nearly died for.
And suddenly I realized something horrifying.
He had lied.
Not just about the affair.
Not just about the divorce.
About everything.
My voice barely worked.
"Daniel..."
He wouldn't look at me.
That told me everything.
The doctor continued.
"The auditors also discovered something else."
Daniel immediately looked up.
Fear flashed across his face.
Real fear.
The kind that appears when someone knows the truth is about to catch them.
May you like
And whatever was coming next...
It was clearly much worse.
