Chapter 6 - Epilogue — The New Horizon

Three months later, the spring thaw finally reached the coast of Maine, turning the grey harbor into a sparkling expanse of blue and gold.

The drafty shingle cottage had undergone a quiet transformation. While we kept its rustic charm, it was now filled with the soft hum of life, the smell of fresh lavender, and the sweet, melodic coos of two newborns.

Alexander and Maya Volkov had arrived two weeks early, stubborn and loud, inheriting their father’s relentless drive and their mother’s fierce spirit.

In the sunlit nursery overlooking the crashing waves of the Atlantic, Damen Volkov sat in an oversized rocking chair. The man who once commanded billions of dollars with a single stroke of his pen was currently wearing a soft cotton shirt with a baby burp cloth slung casually over his broad shoulder.

In his arms, cradled securely against his chest, baby Maya was fast asleep, her tiny fingers curled around his thumb. Alexander lay in his bassinet nearby, gurgling happily as a golden beam of spring sunlight warmed his blanket.

I leaned against the doorframe, watching them, a mug of coffee in my hand.

Damen looked up, catching my reflection in the window. A slow, genuine smile spread across his face—a smile that no one in Manhattan had ever seen, reserved only for this room, for this life.

He shifted Maya carefully, making room on the wide rocking chair, and patted his lap.

“Come here, Mrs. Volkov,” he said softly.

I walked across the wooden floorboards, the tension of the past year completely melted away, and settled into his arms, resting my head against his shoulder. Damen wrapped his free arm around my waist, pulling me close, anchoring us all together in the warmth of the morning sun.

“Thinking about Manhattan?” he asked quietly, pressing a soft kiss into my hair.

“Never,” I murmured, smiling as I watched our son stretch his tiny arms toward the light. “We’re right where we belong.”
