PART 2: THE SECRET SHE CARRIED ALONE

The room fell silent except for the steady beeping of machines.

Ethan couldn't stop staring.

Pregnant.

Chloe had been pregnant.

All this time.

Every holiday.

Every birthday.

Every lonely night after their divorce.

She had been carrying his child.

And he had no idea.

"Why?" he finally whispered.

Chloe laughed.

The sound carried no humor.

"Why?"

She looked away.

"That's your question?"

Another contraction surged.

Pain shot through her body.

She gritted her teeth.

When it passed, she spoke again.

"You divorced me, Ethan."

His face tightened.

"It wasn't like that."

"It was exactly like that."

The words hit harder than she intended.

But they were true.

Two years ago, Ethan's mother had moved into their lives.

At first it was small things.

Unwanted opinions.

Constant criticism.

Subtle insults.

Then bigger things.

Control.

Manipulation.

Interference in every decision.

Chloe tried to establish boundaries.

Nothing unreasonable.

She simply wanted privacy in her own marriage.

Instead, everything exploded.

Ethan chose peace with his mother over conflict.

And eventually chose divorce over standing beside his wife.

The memory still hurt.

Even now.

Especially now.

"You never asked me to stay," Chloe said quietly.

Ethan lowered his head.

Because he couldn't deny it.

He remembered the day.

The divorce papers.

The kitchen table.

The birthday cake she had been decorating.

He remembered her tears.

He remembered walking away.

At the time he believed it was the least painful option.

Now he realized how wrong he had been.

A nurse entered with fresh supplies.

The tension in the room was impossible to miss.

Nobody spoke.

Finally Ethan asked the question haunting him.

"Why didn't you tell me about the baby?"

Chloe looked directly at him.

The answer came instantly.

"You didn't ask."

The words sliced through the room.

Ethan felt every one of them.

Because she was right.

After the divorce, he never called.

Never checked.

Never looked back.

He assumed she had moved on.

He assumed there was nothing left to know.

And now here she was.

Bringing his child into the world.

Without him.

Without support.

Without help.

Without even listing him as the father.

For the first time in years, Ethan hated himself.

Then suddenly the fetal monitor changed.

A sharp alarm echoed through the room.

Everyone looked up.

The baby's heart rate had dropped.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

This wasn't about divorce anymore.

May you like

This was about survival.

To be continued...
