Chapter 4 - The Venomous Trap

By midnight, the Bennett estate was a fortress of silent, tense activity.

Dr. Harrison, the family’s trusted pediatrician for over a decade, had arrived with a solemn expression. In Sophie’s bedroom, he spent an hour examining the children. When he finally stepped out into the hallway, his face was pale, his jaw tightly set.

Marcus met him outside the door. "How are they?"

Dr. Harrison pulled off his stethoscope, his hands slightly trembling. "Ethan has acute hair-follicle trauma on his scalp—the torn patch was pulled with considerable force. But more concerning, Marcus... he is severely dehydrated and showing signs of mild malnutrition. He’s lost nearly four pounds since his checkup six months ago. That’s catastrophic for a toddler."

Marcus gripped the doorframe, his knuckles turning white. "And Sophie?"

"She has minor bruising on her upper arms—defensive marks," Dr. Harrison said grimly. "She’s hyper-vigilant, Marcus. She wouldn't let me touch Ethan until I proved I wasn't going to take him away. Psychologically, she’s operating in survival mode. I've documented every bruise, took blood samples, and photographed the scalp injury. This is a mandatory report situation, Marcus. As a physician, I have to notify Child Protective Services and the police."

"Good," Marcus said, his voice flat. "Because I intend to press every charge the state of New York allows."

Before Dr. Harrison could answer, the sound of heavy boots echoed up the grand staircase.

Two uniformed officers from the Rye Police Department stepped onto the landing, accompanied by a sharp-looking woman in a navy trench coat carrying a thick Manila folder.

Victoria walked up behind them, a white silk handkerchief pressed to her eyes, her posture bowed in an exquisite display of tragic vulnerability.

"Officers, he's up here," Victoria sobbed, her voice echoing through the corridor. "He came home from Singapore in an unhinged rage! He attacked me, locked me in the lounge, and threatened my life! He’s been suffering from severe grief-induced psychosis ever since his first wife died!"

The lead officer, a burly sergeant named Miller, put his hand near his belt holster. "Mr. Bennett? We received a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute and child endangerment."

Marcus didn't flinch. He stood firmly in front of his children's door. "Officer, my name is Marcus Bennett. My wife called you because she realized her abuse of my children was about to be exposed."

"He's lying!" Victoria cried, stepping forward with well-rehearsed anguish. "Look at him! He hired private security to hold me hostage in my own home! He beat little Ethan in a fit of rage because the child was crying, and now he's trying to frame me to protect his reputation!"

The social worker, whose badge read Eleni Vance, stepped forward, her expression skeptical as she looked between Marcus and the weeping woman. "Mr. Bennett, we have an emergency report filed forty minutes ago by Mrs. Bennett alleging that you physically assaulted your two-year-old son upon returning from an international flight."

Marcus looked at Victoria. The sheer audacity of her maneuver was breathtaking. She had called CPS herself while locked in the lounge using a secondary burner phone, launching a preemptive strike to turn the law against him before he could build his case.

"Sergeant Miller," Dr. Harrison stepped forward, producing his medical ID and the fresh chart notes. "I am Dr. Richard Harrison, Chief of Pediatrics at Westchester Medical. I just performed a clinical examination on both children. The physical trauma on Ethan Bennett is consistent with sustained, long-term neglect and acute hair-traction injuries inflicted by an adult hand—specifically matched to fingernail abrasions found on Mrs. Bennett’s hands."

Victoria’s sobbing abruptly stopped for a fraction of a second.

"Furthermore," Dr. Harrison continued calmly, "the toddler's weight loss patterns indicate weeks of severe calorie restriction. I have already submitted my medical report directly to the Westchester District Attorney’s office."

Sergeant Miller looked at Dr. Harrison, then at Victoria. The theatrical tears on her cheeks suddenly looked greasy and fake under the bright corridor lights.

"Is this true, ma'am?" Miller asked, turning toward her.

"They're in it together!" Victoria shrieked, dropping the fragile widow act entirely. Her face twisted into a mask of pure fury. "Marcus pays him! He pays everyone! He’s a billionaire, he thinks he owns this town! Check the house! Check his office! He's insane!"

"Officer," Marcus said quietly, reaching into his suit pocket and pulling out a small flash drive provided by his lead security officer five minutes earlier. "This contains the cloud backup files from the mansion's internal security system. Victoria believed she had disabled the cameras in the children's wing three weeks ago. She didn't realize the nursery hall camera operates on an independent, off-site server."

Victoria stared at the small silver drive in Marcus’s hand. The color completely drained from her lips, leaving her looking hollow and phantom-like.

"Would you like to watch the footage together?" Marcus asked her softly. "Starting with the moment you pulled my son across the floor by his hair?"
