Chapter 8 - The Breach

The storm outside was apocalyptic. Thunder rattled the reinforced windows of the estate, and sheets of torrential rain blinded the exterior security cameras.

Inside, the lights flickered and died, plunging the grand mansion into emergency amber backup lighting.

Emma crouched behind a heavy oak mahogany table in the second-floor gallery, her hands gripping the Glock Dominic had given her. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her mind was terrifyingly clear.

Footsteps echoed softly from the grand staircase below.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

Boots on marble.

“Clear the landing!” a raspy voice hissed from the shadows of the stairs.

Two men in black tactical gear crested the top of the stairs, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the hallway.

Emma took a steadying breath, remembering the safety instructions Marco had barked at her twenty minutes ago.

Aim for center mass. Don't hesitate.

As the first intruder stepped past the corner of the gallery wall, Emma stepped out from behind the table, raised the pistol with both hands, and squeezed the trigger.

Bang!

The deafening roar of the gunshot echoed through the gallery. The intruder spun around, dropping his weapon as he crashed hard against the polished floor.

The second man whipped his rifle toward her.

Before he could fire, a second shot rang out from the opposite end of the hallway—clean, precise, and fatal. Dominic stepped out of the shadows, smoke still curling from the barrel of his rifle, his face a mask of cold fury.

He didn't look at the fallen intruder; he rushed straight to Emma, pulling her behind his armored chest.

“Are you hit?!” Dominic demanded, his hands frantically checking her over.

“I’m fine!” Emma panted, adrenaline coursing through her veins. “I got him!”

Dominic looked down at the intruder she had taken down, then back at his wife. A profound, overwhelming wave of emotion washed over his harsh features. He leaned down, pressing a fierce, desperate kiss against her forehead.

“You’re insane,” Dominic whispered roughly. “And you’re incredible.”

“Save the compliments for later, husband,” Emma muttered, scanning the dark hallway. “There are more of them.”

True to her word, the remaining members of Julian’s strike team converged on the second-floor gallery from the west wing. What followed was ten minutes of brutal, high-stakes close-quarters combat.

Dominic moved through the shadows like a ghost, eliminating threats with ruthless efficiency, while Emma held her ground, covering his flank and ensuring no one flanked their position. Together, operating as a seamless, terrifying unit, they dismantled the breach team piece by piece.

When the last intruder was disarmed and cuffed by Marco down in the foyer, the mansion fell back into an eerie, smoking silence.
