Chapter 6 - The Betrayal of a Son

The hospital waiting room was empty when Eleanor stepped back out into the corridor.
Adrian was sitting on a sofa, staring down at his smartphone. His fingers were flying across the glass screen, his face lit up by the white glow of the monitor. He was typing frantically, his mouth set in a tight, nervous line.
Eleanor walked silently across the carpet, stopping right in front of him.
"Who are you talking to, Adrian?" she asked, her tone flat and dangerous.
Adrian jumped, quickly locking his phone screen and slipping it into his pocket. "Nobody! Just... just checking the news. How is she? Is she awake?"
"She’s awake," Eleanor said, stepping closer until she was towering over her son. "And she told me about the spiced wine."
Adrian’s breath hitched. "Wine? What wine?"
"The wine Chloe Vance brought up to the bridal room last night," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a fierce, venomous whisper. "The wine that contained livestock poison meant to kill your child and bleed your wife to death."
Adrian’s face went instantly pale. "What... what are you talking about? Chloe wouldn't do that! She was just being nice! She came to the wedding to show there were no hard feelings!"
"Nice?" Eleanor slapped him.
The sharp crack echoed across the empty hallway. Adrian held his stinging cheek, staring at his mother in absolute shock.
"You knew!" Eleanor hissed, grabbing the collar of his silk shirt and dragging him toward her. "You knew Chloe was coming up to that room! You knew she was talking to Lila!"
"I didn't know about any poison!" Adrian sobbed, tears spilling over his cheeks. "I swear to God, Mom! I didn't know!"
"Then why were you texting her just now?!" Eleanor demanded, snatching at his pocket. "Give me the phone!"
"No! Mom, stop!" Adrian tried to pull back, but Eleanor, fueled by sixty years of hard labor and a burning rage she had kept buried for decades, wrestled the phone out of his grip.
She pressed his thumb against the sensor to unlock it.
The chat screen opened immediately. The last message sent from Adrian’s phone, just three minutes ago, sat at the top of the log:
Adrian: She woke up. She knows about the wine. Chloe, you told me it was just going to make her sick so she’d leave! You lied to me!
Chloe: Keep your mouth shut, Adrian. If I go down, I'm taking your family's farm with me. Your mother borrowed fifty thousand dollars from my father last year to pay off your gambling debts. You tell the police a word, and my father forecloses on your house tomorrow morning.
Eleanor stared at the text messages, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces.
She turned her gaze onto her son—the boy she had protected, the boy she had slaved over, the boy for whom she had endured thirty years of bitter labor.
"You traded your wife's life... for a debt?" Eleanor whispered, her voice barely audible.
Adrian fell to his knees in the hospital corridor, clutching his mother's skirt, sobbing like a terrified child. "Mom... please! They were going to take the house! Chloe said she’d just make Lila sick enough that she’d want to move back to her hometown! I didn't know it would kill the baby! I didn't know!"

Eleanor slowly pulled her skirt from his grip, stepping back as if looking at a poisonous snake.
"You are not my son," she said quietly.
