Chapter 8 - The Price of Survival

Three days later, the Greenwich police cars parked outside the Cross estate were gone, replaced by unmarked federal vehicles and state investigators who carried boxes of documents out through the front gates.

Mrs. Vivian Ashcroft was locked away in a maximum-security holding facility awaiting trial for vehicular homicide, corporate espionage, and conspiracy. The web of corruption she had woven inside the Cross shipping conglomerates was dismantled piece by piece before the week was out.

Inside the East Wing nursery, the security cameras had been ripped from the ceilings and thrown into a dumpster.

The heavy oak door was propped wide open, never to be locked again.

In the sunlit kitchen, Ruby Lane sat at the center island with a cup of real, salted coffee.

The doorbell chimed softly.

Ruby stood up, walked to the front foyer, and opened the door. A courier stood on the marble step, handing her a thick, certified envelope bearing the seal of a Manhattan medical trust.

She opened it with trembling fingers.

Inside was a fully paid medical account ledger covering all past, present, and future treatments, surgeries, and specialized care for her brother, Miles—paid in full, with a lifetime retainer for her family’s security and housing in any city they chose.

“You’re not opening your mail in the service corridor anymore, Ruby,” a deep voice said behind her.

She turned around.

Nathaniel Cross stood at the foot of the grand staircase, wearing a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Beside him stood Oliver, wearing yellow socks and holding a brand-new toy rabbit without a single torn seam.

Ollie looked up at Ruby, smiled a small, genuine smile, and held out a piece of paper covered in clumsy, cheerful crayon drawings of dinosaurs.

“For you,” Ollie said clearly.

Ruby knelt down, taking the drawing in her hands, a bright tear slipping down her cheek as she looked up at the billionaire who had finally learned that silence was never obedience—only survival.

“Thank you, Ollie,” Ruby whispered, her heart finally at peace in a house that had finally learned how to breathe.
