Chapter 4 - The House of Secrets

Later that afternoon, while Rachel rested comfortably under the care of the hospital staff, Daniel drove back to the Beacon Hill apartment.

The rooms felt heavy, haunted by the lingering trauma of the past few weeks. The blue quilt still lay crumpled on the bed, a silent monument to the suffering Rachel had endured in secret.

Daniel walked straight into the master bathroom.

He opened the oak vanity cabinet where Rachel kept her toiletries. Pushed behind a row of spare soap bars and towels sat the amber glass bottle Margaret had brought.

Using a pair of latex gloves he had grabbed from the hardware store, Daniel carefully lifted the bottle by its neck, placing it inside a sealed Ziploc bag. He knew the police would need the physical evidence, but he wanted to see for himself. He read the faint, handwritten label Margaret had pasted over the manufacturer's warning: Organic Soothing Blend. Apply generously.

Next, Daniel drove across town to his mother’s house.

Margaret lived in a pristine, perfectly manicured suburban home in Alamo Heights—a place where everything looked immaculate on the surface, hiding the rot underneath.

He didn’t knock. He used his spare key, pushing the heavy wooden front door open and stepping into the foyer.

“Mom!” Daniel called out, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Margaret appeared from the kitchen, wearing a neat floral apron, holding a cup of coffee. When she saw Daniel standing in her hallway, her expression instantly shifted into one of aggrieved martyrdom.

“Oh, so you finally decided to check on your mother after treating me like a criminal in your own home?” Margaret sighed dramatically, setting her coffee cup down on the foyer table. “I suppose that ungrateful girl has filled your head with more lies—”

“Where did you get it, Mom?” Daniel interrupted, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Margaret blinked, thrown off by his calm demeanor. “Get what?”

Daniel pulled the Ziploc bag containing the amber bottle out of his jacket pocket and held it up.

Margaret’s face froze. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin a sickly, pale gray.

“The chemical solvent you rubbed into my wife’s legs,” Daniel continued, stepping closer to her. “The industrial compound you disguised as an organic lotion. Where did you buy it? Who helped you acquire it?”

“You’re... you’re out of your mind,” Margaret stammered, backing away until her spine hit the living room wall. “I brought her a herbal oil! If she ruined her own skin, that’s her own hysterical doing—!”

“The hospital ran a full chemical analysis,” Daniel said, his voice cutting through her lies like a knife. “The police have the lab reports, Mom. They also have Rachel’s sworn statement, and detectives are already pulling security footage from the hardware store and the supply shops around your neighborhood to see where you purchased industrial paint stripper.”

Margaret’s composure shattered completely. Her hands began to shake, and her breathing turned shallow and rapid.

“I had to do it, Daniel!” she shrieked, the mask of a loving mother tearing away to reveal the desperate, narcissistic tyrant underneath. “Can’t you see?! That girl was never right for you! She’s common, she works in a bakery, she has no breeding! She was trapping you with a baby so she could steal everything you’ve worked for! I was only trying to save you! If she couldn't walk, if she couldn't trap you in that apartment, you would have opened your eyes and come back home to where you belong!”

Daniel stared at the woman who had given him life, feeling an absolute, profound emptiness. There was no remorse in her eyes. Only a twisted, bitter obsession.

“You didn’t save me, Mom,” Daniel said softly. “You just lost me forever.”

He turned around, walking out the front door and locking it behind him for the very last time.

As he sat in his truck, dialing Detective Miller to inform him that his mother had essentially confessed, Daniel felt a heavy weight lift from his shoulders. The secrets were out. The poison was exposed. And the healing could finally begin.
