Chapter 9 - The Father's Legacy

Spring arrived in Iowa. The snow melted, giving way to bright green lawns, blooming tulips, and warm, gentle sunlight.
On an April morning, Mason stood in the grand boardroom on the top floor of the downtown corporate tower—the headquarters of Sullivan Enterprises.
Around the long mahogany table sat the board of directors, Arthur Sterling, and senior plant managers from across the state. At the head of the table sat Eleanor.
Arthur Sterling stood up, holding a set of formal legal documents stamped with the official state seal.
“Gentlemen, and members of the board,” Arthur announced, his voice filled with pride. “Under the terms established by the late Lawrence Sullivan, the primary maturity clause of the Sullivan Family Living Trust dictates that full executive control of the enterprise may be transferred upon the joint approval of the Trustee and the fulfillment of character requirements.”
Arthur turned toward Eleanor. “Mrs. Sullivan, as the sole Trustee, how do you rule?”
Eleanor looked down the long table at Mason.
He was dressed in a tailored navy suit—simple, elegant, and unpretentious. Over the last eighteen months, he had worked every job in the manufacturing plant, earned the deep respect of every factory worker, overhauled the company’s worker safety program, and managed his personal life with humility and quiet strength.
Eleanor smiled—a bright, beautiful smile that erased years of pain from her face.
“I rule that my son is ready,” she said clearly.
The boardroom erupted into warm applause. Board members stood up, shaking Mason’s hand, offering their congratulations.
Mason walked over to his mother’s seat. He didn't cheer. He didn't jump with excitement over the forty-eight million dollar portfolio now placed under his direction.
Instead, he pulled a document from his inner jacket pocket and laid it before his mother and Arthur Sterling.
“What is this, Mason?” Arthur asked, adjusting his glasses.
“This is my first executive order as Chairman,” Mason said softly. “I am reallocating twenty percent of the trust’s annual dividend profits into a permanent non-profit foundation: The Eleanor Sullivan Foundation for Widows and Family Protection.”
Eleanor gasped, her hands moving over her lips.
“This foundation will provide free legal representation, financial counseling, and safe housing for women and mothers who are being financially exploited, abused, or manipulated,” Mason explained, looking directly into his mother’s tear-filled eyes. “No mother should ever have to fight alone to protect her children from predators.”
Eleanor stood up slowly. She threw her arms around Mason’s neck, hugging him with every ounce of strength in her body.

“Your father is so proud of you today, Mason,” she wept into his shoulder. “So very proud.”
“I’m just following my mother’s example,” Mason whispered back, kissing her cheek.
