Chapter 2 - The Digital Witness

The blue light of the tablet illuminated the cramped hotel room, casting long, dancing shadows against the floral wallpaper. My hands trembled as the footage began to buffer. I had expected to see nothing—perhaps a blurry image of Louisa wandering into a room, or maybe the truth of Lydia’s misplaced jewelry. I was not prepared for the reality of the home I had left behind.
The timestamp flashed: January 12th, 10:14 PM.
On the screen, the living room was dark, lit only by the pale moonlight filtering through the blinds. Heather, my sister-in-law, crept into the frame. She wasn't acting like someone searching for a lost item; she moved with the practiced, predatory grace of a professional thief. She bypassed the living room entirely and headed straight for Lydia’s bedroom door.
Five minutes later, she emerged. In her hand, she held something that caught the light—the gold bracelet.
But that wasn't the end of it. She didn't hide it in her own room. She walked over to Louisa’s toy chest—the one Louisa had been forbidden to play with while I was away—and shoved the bracelet deep into the corner of the chest, beneath a pile of mismatched socks.
My heart hammered against my ribs. It was a setup. A calculated, malicious frame-up designed to humiliate my daughter and break my spirit.
But then, the camera caught something even worse.
Walter, my father-in-law, walked into the room. He saw Heather hiding the bracelet. I braced myself for a confrontation, for a father to reprimand his daughter for framing her niece. Instead, Walter laughed. He pulled a thick envelope from his jacket—an envelope that looked suspiciously like the cash I had been setting aside for Louisa’s college fund—and handed it to Heather.

"Good job," he muttered. "She's too soft. If she thinks her brat is a thief, she'll leave, and we won't have to deal with her anymore. And the college fund? That covers your debt."
I clutched my chest, gasping for air. The theft, the hair-shaving, the violence—it wasn't just about a bracelet. It was a long-term plan to drain my finances and drive me out of the family, orchestrated by the very people who claimed to hold "family values" above all else.
