Chapter 8 - The Gala Night

The grand ballroom of the Wellington Grand was a breathtaking symphony of crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and black-tie elegance. Three hundred of New York’s most elite executives, politicians, and philanthropists mingled beneath the soaring ceilings, sipping champagne and listening to a live string quartet.

Standing near the edge of the dais, Julian adjusted his black silk bow tie, looking out over the crowd.

He wore a tailored tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders with lethal precision, but his eyes weren't scanning the room for board members or investors. They were fixed on the grand staircase.

Then she appeared.

Anna descended the marble steps wearing a stunning floor-length emerald-green silk gown that caught the chandelier light with every step. Her blonde hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, framing her delicate face and the soft, radiant smile that made time seem to stop.

Julian caught his breath. He had seen royalty, supermodels, and corporate heiresses in this ballroom, but none of them held a candle to the woman who had walked into his life carrying a diaper bag and twelve dollars.

As she reached the bottom of the stair, Julian walked forward, offering his arm.

"You look..." Julian searched for the right word, his voice dropping into a low, intimate murmur. "...breathtaking."

Anna blushed, sliding her hand through the crook of his arm. "Thank you. And you clean up pretty well yourself, Mr. Martin."

"Tonight, I'm just Julian," he whispered, leaning down slightly. "Especially to you."

The applause rippled through the room as Arthur Vance and three dissident board members stood near the back bar, nursing their drinks with dark, calculating expressions. They had spent the afternoon threatening a vote of no confidence, certain that Julian’s new policies would ruin the company.

Julian ignored them entirely.

He led Anna to the center of the ballroom as the string quartet transitioned into a slow, romantic waltz. Wrapping his strong arms around her waist, he pulled her close against his chest.

"Are you worried about tomorrow?" Anna asked softly, resting her head against his shoulder as they began to glide across the polished floor. "The board meeting at nine... Vance told everyone you're committing corporate suicide."

"Let them talk," Julian murmured, breathing in the scent of her hair. "Tomorrow, we present the new community housing initiative funded by the foundation. If the board wants to vote me out because I decided to build homes instead of offshore accounts, let them try. I’ll liquidate my shares, walk out of this building, and start over tomorrow."

Anna pulled back just enough to look into his slate-gray eyes. "You'd give it all up?"

"I already told you," Julian smiled, a warm, genuine expression that reached his eyes. "You and those twins are my empire now. Everything else is just glass and steel."

Applause erupted around them as the dance ended, and little Sophia and Samuel—dressed in matching miniature tuxedos and dresses—came running across the dance floor, shouting, "Mommy! Julian! We want cake!"

The entire ballroom laughed, and Julian scooped both kids up in his arms, hoisting them into the air as Anna laughed brightly, her hand resting securely in the crook of his arm.

Arthur Vance slammed his champagne flute down on the bar, turned on his heel, and stormed out of the ballroom, defeated before the battle even began.
