Chapter 4 - The Trial of Truth
The trial became the biggest event in the history of the county. The media descended on Maple Ridge, turning the ‘Hale Family Scandal’ into a cautionary tale about greed and the mask of high society.
My testimony was the centerpiece. For three days, I sat on the stand and deconstructed the last eight years. I brought the receipts, the emails, and the audio recordings I had painstakingly gathered in the months leading up to the final confrontation. I told them about the 'family support,' the renovations, the vacations that were really just meetings for moving illicit funds.
The defense attorney, a man known for getting monsters off the hook, tried to paint me as the 'jilted wife,' the woman who went crazy after her husband’s family didn't give her enough attention. But the ledger—the digital trail I had helped the Feds piece together—was undeniable.
The most jarring moment came when I was asked about the night of the attack.
"Mrs. Carter," the prosecutor asked, "when your husband saw his mother swing that bat at you, what did he do?"
The entire courtroom went silent. I looked at Daniel. He was hunched over, staring at his shoes. He couldn't meet my gaze.
"He did nothing," I said, my voice unwavering. "He didn't move. He didn't speak. He watched."
When the verdict came in, it was swift. Margaret Hale was sentenced to fifteen years for racketeering, assault, and tax evasion. Daniel, facing charges for his role as an accessory and courier, received ten.
