CHAPTER 2 — THE MOMENT EVERYTHING STARTED TO FALL APART

I woke up to white light.

Too bright.

Too clean.

Too far away from the place I last remembered.

For a few seconds, I didn’t understand where I was.

My body felt like it had been replaced with something heavier, something unfamiliar, something fragile in a different way than before.

Then the pain came back.

Not all at once.

In layers.

Like memory returning with cruelty.

A hospital monitor beeped somewhere beside me.

Slow.

Steady.

Too calm for what my body felt like inside.

I tried to move.

A sharp pain cut through my abdomen instantly.

I gasped.

And then I remembered.

Vanessa.

The kitchen floor.

The second hit.

The dragging.

The water.

The silence before everything went black.

“Babies…” I whispered.

My voice cracked immediately.

A chair shifted beside me.

And then I saw her.

A nurse.

Her expression careful.

Too careful.

Like she had been trained to soften truth before delivering it.

“You’re awake,” she said gently.

I grabbed her wrist.

“Where are my babies?”

A pause.

Too long.

Then she said the words no mother should ever hear like that.

“They’re alive… but we are monitoring them very closely.”

My chest tightened instantly.

“That’s not an answer.”

She looked down for half a second.

That was enough.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

The door opened.

And Daniel walked in.

I had never seen him like that before.

Not the confident man who signed million-dollar contracts.

Not the calm husband who always had answers.

He looked like someone who had been running inside his own mind for hours without stopping.

He saw me.

And everything in his face collapsed.

“Lena,” he said quickly, rushing to my bedside.

“I’m here. I’m here.”

I grabbed his hand immediately.

It was shaking.

That terrified me more than anything.

“Daniel,” I said, “Vanessa—she—”

“I know,” he interrupted.

His voice was tight.

Controlled only by effort.

“I know something happened.”

I stared at him.

“Something happened?” I repeated.

My voice broke.

“She attacked me.”

Silence.

The room didn’t react.

But I saw something shift in Daniel’s eyes.

Recognition.

Then disbelief.

Then something colder.

“What do you mean attacked you?” he asked slowly.

Tears filled my eyes immediately.

“She came into our house. She brought fake documents. She said you approved a withdrawal.”

I swallowed hard.

“She wanted the money for the babies.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That account is locked.”

“I told her that,” I whispered.

“She didn’t listen.”

Another pause.

He looked away for a second.

Just one.

But I felt it.

Something cracking.

“What happened after?” he asked.

My breath trembled.

“She hit me.”

The room went completely silent.

Even the monitor felt louder.

Daniel froze.

“No,” he said immediately.

“She wouldn’t—”

“She did,” I said firmly.

My voice stronger now.

“She hit me. I fell. My water broke. She dragged me—Daniel, she dragged me across the floor.”

The silence after that was different.

Heavier.

Unstable.

I saw his hands clench.

Slowly.

Then release.

Then clench again.

Like his body was trying to process something his mind refused to accept.

A doctor entered quietly.

Spoke softly about scans, monitoring, premature labor risk.

Words blurred together.

Nothing stuck except one thing:

“The babies are stressed.”

Daniel didn’t respond.

He was staring at the floor.

Not at me.

Not at the doctor.

At something only he could see.

Then his phone rang.

He answered immediately.

Too fast.

“Yes?” he said sharply.

A pause.

His expression changed instantly.

“What do you mean she left?” he said.

My stomach dropped.

He turned slightly away from me.

But I could still hear.

“She was at the house?”

Another pause.

His voice dropped lower.

“…and she took documents?”

I couldn’t breathe properly anymore.

When he hung up, he didn’t move for a few seconds.

Then he turned back to me.

And I knew before he spoke.

Something had shifted permanently.

“She was never supposed to access that account,” he said slowly.

I nodded weakly.

“I know.”

His voice tightened.

“Lena… she didn’t just attack you.”

A pause.

“She tried to override financial authorization systems.”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally did, his voice was almost unreadable.

“It means she planned this.”

A silence fell between us.

Different now.

Not confusion.

Not shock.

Understanding.

And then—

the door opened again.

A police officer stepped in.

Followed by another.

My heart stopped.

“Mr. Whitmore,” one of them said carefully, looking at Daniel.

“We need to ask you a few questions regarding attempted fraud and assault.”

Daniel didn’t move.

Not immediately.

Then he looked at me.

Just once.

And I saw it.

He wasn’t just angry anymore.

He was awake.

May you like

And whatever was coming next…

was no longer just a family matter.
