Chapter 5 - The Downward Spiral

By Wednesday afternoon, Mark’s life had completely unraveled into a waking nightmare.

The internal audit at Sterling & Vance had moved with terrifying speed. By Tuesday evening, the human resources director and the managing partner had called him into a closed-door meeting, presenting him with a termination letter citing “conduct unbecoming an executive and gross reputational liability.”

His company-issued laptop and security badge were confiscated on the spot. He was escorted out of the building by security guards before he could even clear out his personal desk drawers.

When he returned to his empty suburban home—the house that now legally belonged entirely to Emily through her pre-marital family trust—he found a notice posted on the front door by the mortgage and property management holding company: Property under exclusive injunction. Unauthorized entry prohibited.

He was locked out of his own home.

Desperate, broke, and humiliated, Mark tried calling Madison one last time.

Her phone rang twice before a crisp, automated message played: “The subscriber has disconnected this number.”

When he drove across town to her loft, the building concierge informed him that Miss Vale had checked out of her lease early Monday morning, leaving no forwarding address and instructing management to refuse entry to any visitors inquiring about her.

He had been used, discarded, and left stranded in the wreckage of his own arrogance.

By Friday morning, Mark found himself sitting in a cramped, harsh-smelling attorney’s consultation room in downtown Chicago. His court-appointed or discount private lawyer—a rumpled man named Thomas Gable who looked like he spent more time sleeping in his car than practicing law—slapped a stack of court papers onto the metal table.

“It’s bad, Mr. Carter,” Gable said bluntly, adjusting his thick glasses. “Emily’s legal team isn't just asking for a standard divorce. They’re pushing for full, sole legal and physical custody of the triplets, supervised visitation only at the court’s discretion, and total forfeiture of marital asset division on the grounds of severe marital misconduct and financial dissipation.”

Mark rubbed his aching temples, his voice hollow. “Can we fight it? Can we request a joint custody hearing?”

Gable gave a dry, humorless laugh. “Fight it with what money? Your corporate accounts are frozen, your salary is gone, and your personal savings were completely wiped out when Emily’s forensic accountants proved you funneled over forty thousand dollars of family funds into luxury dinners and gifts for Miss Vale over the last twelve months.”

Mark went completely numb. “Forty thousand...?”

“And that’s just what they’ve documented so far,” Gable sighed, leaning back in his chair. “Look, Mark, my professional advice? Don't contest it. Sign the settlement agreement when it’s presented. If you fight, Emily’s father—who, in case you forgot, is a retired federal judge with thirty years of bench connections—will ensure you’re not just stripped of your assets, but facing criminal financial fraud charges as well.”

The walls of the consultation room seemed to press inward, crushing the last remnants of Mark’s pride into dust.

He had wanted freedom. He had wanted the easy, carefree life of his youth with Madison. He had wanted to escape the heavy responsibilities of fatherhood and marriage.

Now, he had absolute freedom.

May you like

He had no wife, no children, no home, no job, no money, and no future.

He sat in the silence of the dingy office, staring down at his hands, finally understanding the true cost of a single, unforgivable choice made at 2:17 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon.
