Chapter 6 - The Collapse of Brianna’s World

While her parents stared into the abyss of impending criminal prosecution, Brianna sat at the kitchen island of her best friend Chloe’s house, staring at her laptop screen in absolute disbelief.

The local news channel’s digital affiliate had picked up the story.

“FORMER REAL ESTATE BROKER AND WIFE FACING FELONY FRAUD CHARGES IN EL PASO COUNTY ESTATE SCAM INVOLVING ACTIVE-DUTY SOLDIER.”

Beneath the headline was a photograph of Victor standing outside a country club from a year ago, looking smug and self-assured. Below that was a court document summary detailing the fraudulent death affidavit filed with the county recorder’s office.

Chloe placed a mug of hot tea beside Brianna’s hand. “Bri... are you okay?”

“I feel sick,” Brianna whispered, her voice hollow. “I didn't know, Chloe. I swear I didn't know they forged documents. Dad told me Elena was just being difficult about an old family property that nobody used.”

“Everyone in school is talking about it,” Chloe said gently. “People are sharing the news link on group chats. They’re saying your parents tried to steal an officer’s inheritance and lied about her dying in combat.”

Brianna buried her face in her hands, a fresh wave of humiliation washing over her. All her life, she had looked up to Victor, basking in the lifestyle he pretended to afford through high-end consulting and smart investments. Now she realized that every vacation, every designer handbag, and every luxury dinner had been built on a foundation of mounting debt, desperate cons, and finally, outright criminal forgery.

Her phone buzzed on the counter. It was a text message from her mother: Brianna, please come home. We need you. We made a mistake, but we’re still your family.

Brianna stared at the screen for a long time.

Then she tapped out a single reply: You didn't make a mistake, Mom. You committed a crime. Don't contact me again until you talk to a public defender.

She hit send, powered off her phone, and pushed it across the table. For the first time in her eighteen years, Brianna realized that the people she trusted most had built their entire world on quicksand—and anyone standing too close to them was bound to sink.
