Chapter 7 - The Downfall of the Parasites

Within forty-eight hours of Judge Holloway’s ruling, the rapid collapse of Adrian’s life went from a legal nightmare to a full-blown public spectacle.
With his corporate accounts permanently frozen, his business partners filing civil lawsuits for breach of fiduciary duty, and federal investigators circling his real estate firm like sharks, Adrian’s empire vanished into thin air. The luxury office in downtown Miami was repossessed by the commercial landlord. His imported sports cars were towed from the building garage to satisfy unpaid liens.
And Valentina?
True to the parasitic nature that brought her into our lives in the first place, she didn't stick around to help Adrian weather the storm.
On a rainy Thursday evening—just one week after the courtroom battle—Elena called me while I was helping Isabella set up her new art easel in our expansive living room overlooking Biscayne Bay.
“Mariana, you are not going to believe what is happening across the street from my friend’s townhome in Coral Gables,” Elena whispered excitedly into the phone.
“What’s going on?” I asked, pausing as I handed Isabella a blue paintbrush.
“Valentina is currently loading her designer luggage into an Uber while screaming bloody murder at Adrian out on the front lawn,” Elena laughed. “She’s literally throwing her Birkin bags into the back seat, shouting that she’s not going down with a bankrupt criminal, and leaving him standing in the rain in his socks!”
I couldn't help the small, cathartic laugh that escaped my lips.
“Karma is a very efficient scheduler, Elena,” I murmured.
“What about Adrian?”
“He made his bed,” I said simply. “The courts will handle his debts, and the federal prosecutors will handle his embezzlement charges. I’m done wasting my energy on a man who never valued what was right in front of him.”
Later that night, as the storm clouds cleared and the Miami sky opened up into a brilliant expanse of stars, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from an unknown, blocked number.
I almost deleted it without reading, but curiosity won out. I opened the message.
“Mariana, please. I have nothing left. They repossessed the apartment, Valentina took whatever cash was left in the secret accounts and disappeared, and my lawyers won’t even return my calls. I know I destroyed everything. Can we please talk? Just give me one chance to explain.”
I stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment.
There was no anger left in my chest. No bitterness. Just the profound, peaceful emptiness of a chapter that had finally closed forever.

I tapped the screen, blocked the number permanently, and tossed the phone onto the coffee table.
I didn't owe him an explanation. I didn't owe him forgiveness. My only obligation was to the little girl sleeping peacefully down the hall in a room filled with sunlight, laughter, and unconditional love.
