Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Houston

Two weeks later.

The high-rise penthouse of Vane Tower in downtown Houston offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the entire city. The setting sun cast long, amber shadows across the dark hardwood floors and modern artwork adorning the walls.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, holding a glass of sparkling water, looking out at the glittering lights of the financial district.

Behind me, the soft sound of Gabriel’s footsteps approached. He stepped up, wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

"Thinking about them?" Gabriel asked softly.

"A little," I admitted, leaning back against his warm chest. "Vance told me they moved into a small two-bedroom rental apartment in suburban San Antonio yesterday."

"Your father took a job as a mid-level car salesman," Gabriel said quietly. "Your mother is trying to sell her remaining jewelry to pay for Allison’s divorce attorney."

I took a deep breath. There was no joy in hearing about their downfall, but there was a profound sense of justice. For twenty-eight years, my family had measured human worth strictly by bank accounts, designer labels, and social rankings. Now, they were forced to live in the exact reality they had spent their lives despising.

"And Ryan?" I asked.

"Ryan pled guilty to three counts of wire fraud and embezzlement this morning," Gabriel replied, his arms tightening slightly around me. "His father refused to pay his legal fees. He’s looking at seven to ten years in federal prison."

I turned around in Gabriel’s arms, looking into his deep, loving dark eyes.

"Thank you, Gabriel," I whispered, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. "Not for ruining them... but for standing by me when I was ready to fall."

"Clara," Gabriel said, his voice filled with an intense, unshakeable devotion, "five years ago, when you walked into my office in London, pregnant, betrayed, and determined to build a life on your own terms... I knew you were the strongest person I would ever meet. I spent four years waiting for you to let me love you completely. I will never let anyone hurt you again."

The door to the private study opened, and Daisy came running out in her fluffy yellow pajamas, holding a storybook.

"Mommy! Daddy!" she giggled, jumping between us. "It’s bedtime! Daddy promised to read the story about the dragon!"

Gabriel laughed, a warm, rich sound, lifting Daisy up onto his shoulders. "A promise is a promise, little princess. Let's go defeat some dragons."

As I watched them walk down the hallway toward Daisy’s room, my heart felt completely full. The darkness of my past had finally burned away, leaving behind a foundation that no malice, no arrogance, and no family betrayal could ever break again.
