Chapter 7 - Blood and Fire

The siege lasted twenty-two minutes.

To Claire, sitting in the vault with four terrified children, it felt like twenty-two years.

On the security monitors, the battle for the Rinaldi estate reached its brutal climax. The Moretti mercenaries, expecting an easy ambush against an unprepared household, had run directly into the full, terrible weight of Julian Rinaldi’s personal war machine.

Within fifteen minutes, tactical backup units from the syndicate arrived at the estate perimeter, trapping the attackers in a lethal crossfire between the front gates and the mansion foyer.

On the central monitor, Claire watched as the last remaining Moretti lieutenant was disarmed and forced to his knees in the ruined parlor by Marco and Julian.

The fight was over.

The pneumatic seal of the vault door groaned, releasing a hiss of pressurized air as the heavy steel mechanism unlocked from the outside.

The door swung open.

Julian stood in the doorway.

His white shirt was torn at the shoulder, stained with soot and blood, his hair messy, his breath coming in heavy, ragged gasps. He dropped his weapon into a holster, stepping into the vault with wide, desperate eyes.

“Claire,” he rasped.

Before he could take another step, Claire launched herself out of the chair, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his collarbone.

Julian’s massive arms wrapped around her waist instantly, lifting her off her feet, holding her so tightly she could barely breathe. He pressed his face into her hair, letting out a long, shuddering sob of pure, overwhelming relief.

“I’m here,” Claire whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks as she kissed his neck, his jaw, his lips. “We’re safe. Everyone is safe.”

The four children spilled out of the vault, throwing their arms around Julian’s legs. Nico gripped his dad’s belt; Leo hugged his waist; Sam held his hand; and Rosie squeezed into the middle of the group hug, holding her faded bunny.

Julian dropped to his knees on the concrete cellar floor, pulling all four children and Claire into a massive, tight embrace, kissing each of their heads in turn.

“I’m sorry,” Julian choked out, his dark eyes shining with tears as he looked at his sons. “I’m so sorry I couldn't protect your mother. But I promise you... I will never let anyone hurt this family again.”

Nico looked up at his father, his thumb tracing the scar above his eyebrow. “You didn't fail, Dad. Claire caught the bad guys.”

Julian let out a wet, breathless laugh, looking up at Claire with an expression of such fierce, absolute love that it made her heart ache.

“She certainly did,” Julian whispered.
