Chapter 6 - The House of Cards Crumbles

By Friday afternoon, Joanna’s personal life had descended into utter chaos as well.

Without her monthly car lease payment covered, BMW Financial Services had dispatched a repo crew to her suburban townhouse in Chandler. At 2:15 p.m., while Joanna was inside preparing a mid-afternoon snack for four-year-old Harper, a heavy flatbed tow truck backed silently into her driveway.

By the time Joanna heard the mechanical whine of the winch and rushed to her front window, her pristine white X3 was already hoisted off the ground, its rear tires locked into the lift arms.

"Hey! Stop! What are you doing?!" Joanna shrieked, flinging her front door open and sprinting barefoot across the gravel driveway in her house slippers. "That’s my car! You can't just take it!"

The repo driver, a weathered man with a thick beard who looked like he had heard every excuse in the book, didn't even turn off his winch motor. He stepped down from the cab, clipped a clipboard under his arm, and looked at Joanna with bored indifference.

"Order of repossession straight from BMW Financial, ma'am," the driver said flatly, pointing to the paperwork. "Three consecutive missed payments totaling two thousand four hundred dollars. Vehicle is being impounded at our North Phoenix lot. You can redeem it by paying the full past-due balance plus impound fees in certified funds."

"Do you know who my family is?!" Joanna shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical rage. "My mother is Beverly Sterling! My sister is a high-level corporate director! You can't do this to me!"

"Lady, I don't care if your dad is the president," the driver replied, climbing back into his cab and slamming the door. "Talk to your bank."

Within thirty seconds, the tow truck pulled out of the driveway, hauling Joanna’s luxury SUV down the street and leaving her standing barefoot on the asphalt, humiliated, stranded, and completely carless.

Sobbing in frustration, Joanna pulled out her phone and dialed Beverly’s number.

"Mom! They took my car! The repo truck just towed it right out of my driveway!" Joanna wailed the moment Beverly answered.

"Quiet, Joanna!" Beverly hissed over the line, her own voice tight with panic. "I am dealing with an absolute catastrophe of my own! The bank is foreclosing on the house! Claire has completely cut us off, and she won't even answer my voicemails! We are facing actual, literal ruin!"

Joanna stopped crying. The reality of their situation finally, truly pierced through their shared bubble of narcissism and entitlement.

"What do you mean she won't answer?" Joanna asked, her voice dropping to a frightened whisper. "Mom... what are we going to do? If we don't have money, how are we going to pay our bills? How are we going to live?"

Beverly fell silent for a long, heavy moment. When she spoke again, her voice carried a dark, desperate edge.

"She thinks she can hide behind her corporate job and her apartment security gates," Beverly muttered, venom dripping from every syllable. "She thinks she’s untouchable. But she forgot one very important thing."

"What?" Joanna asked.

"She has a daughter," Beverly said coldly. "And children go to school every single day."
