Chapter 10 - A Peaceful Horizon in Phoenix

Sunday morning in Phoenix brought a cool, refreshing breeze that swept down from the McDowell Mountains, carrying the clean scent of desert sage and blooming palo verde trees.
There was no tension in the air. No frantic phone calls, no toxic drop-ins, no lingering shadows of fear.
Maisie and I were sitting on the plush carpet of our living room floor, surrounded by a mess of colorful building blocks, construction paper, and half-eaten chocolate sweet rolls.
"Mommy, look! I built a giant castle!" Maisie announced proudly, holding up a wobbly structure made of plastic bricks with a tiny plastic unicorn perched on top.
"That is the most magnificent castle I have ever seen in my life," I beamed, leaning over to kiss the top of her head. "Do you think the unicorn needs a dragon guardian?"
"Yes! A friendly dragon!" she giggled, clapping her hands together.
I smiled, watching her laugh without a single care in the world.
The eighteen thousand dollars a month I had previously wasted on maintaining my family’s toxic lifestyle was now safely diverted into a dedicated college trust fund for my daughter, alongside a healthy investment portfolio that guaranteed our absolute financial independence for decades to come. Beverly’s house had officially gone to foreclosure auction, and Joanna had been forced to move into a modest rental apartment and get an actual job. They were finally learning how the real world worked—without me footing the bill.
My phone chimed softly on the coffee table. I glanced over. It was a calendar notification reminding me of our evening plans: Pizzeria dinner downtown, followed by ice cream.
I picked up the phone, swiped away the notification, and locked the screen.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't looking over my shoulder. I wasn't bracing for the next unreasonable demand, the next emotional manipulation, or the next cruel game.
I had built a sanctuary for my daughter and me—strong, secure, and entirely unbreakable.
"Mommy?" Maisie asked, tilting her head. "Are we going to have a happy day today?"
May you like
I pulled her into my arms, holding her close against my heart, feeling the steady, beautiful rhythm of her breathing.
"Every single day from now on, sweetie," I whispered, looking out the sunlit window toward the bright Arizona horizon. "Every single day."
