Chapter 7 - The Deposition & The Paternity Bombshell

Two weeks later, inside the grand glass conference room of the Fulton County Family Court, a formal divorce and custody deposition was convened.
Madeline sat at the head of the long oak table wearing a sharp navy blazer, her hand gently resting on her legal file. Beside her sat Victoria Sterling.
Across the table sat Jeffrey, wearing his orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, flanked by his court-appointed attorney. Sitting in the gallery behind him was Noelle, looking frail, desperate, and completely broken.
The court reporter adjusted her stenography machine. “We are on the record in the matter of Harrell v. Harrell.”
Jeffrey’s public defender cleared his throat nervously. “Your Honor’s referee… my client, despite his current legal complications, is seeking joint legal custody of his minor son, Liam Harrell, along with emergency spousal support from Mrs. Madeline Harrell, given his current lack of financial income.”
Victoria Sterling let out a short, cold laugh that echoed through the room.
“Spousal support?” Victoria asked, her voice dripping with absolute legal contempt. “Counsel, your client is currently facing twelve federal felony counts and three state counts of felony child cruelty. Under Georgia Code Section 19-6-1, a spouse guilty of severe criminal misconduct and abandonment is barred from receiving a single dollar of alimony.”
“My client was under immense stress!” Mark argued weakly. “He was misled by Cynthia Vance! He genuinely believed he was acting in the best interests of his family—”
“His family?” Madeline interrupted, speaking for the first time.
Her voice wasn't loud, but it possessed an authority that silenced the entire room. She looked directly into Jeffrey’s hollow, bloodshot eyes.
“Jeffrey,” Madeline said slowly. “You spent two years telling your mother and your friends that Liam was 'faulty.' You let your mother call him an animal. You fed Cynthia’s child with silver spoons while my son drank water from the bathroom floor.”
Jeffrey lowered his eyes, his hands trembling in his cuffs. “Maddie… I didn't know how bad it was… Mom told me—”
“Do not blame your mother for your own cowardice, Jeffrey,” Madeline cut in cleanly. “Your mother is being indicted on felony child neglect charges tomorrow morning.”
Noelle let out a soft wail from the back row, clutching her purse to her face.
Victoria pulled out a crisp white envelope and laid it flat in the center of the table.
“Let the record reflect,” Victoria stated, “that we are submitting Exhibit F: the certified DNA report proving that Austin Vance is not Jeffrey Harrell’s child. Furthermore, we are submitting Exhibit G: the forensic audit showing that Jeffrey spent $1.2 million of embezzled corporate funds to set up an irrevocable trust for a child that belongs to his business rival.”
Jeffrey winced as if he had been slapped across the face. The humiliation was absolute, public, and recorded in court transcripts for eternity.
“We are offering one final settlement agreement, Jeffrey,” Victoria continued, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table. “You will sign a full, voluntary surrender of all parental rights regarding Liam. You will execute a total waiver of any claim to marital property, corporate stock, or estate assets. In exchange, Madeline will agree not to pursue civil wrongful-tort damages against your mother’s small remaining pension.”
Jeffrey looked at the surrender paper. Then he looked at his mother, who was nodding frantically, silently begging him to sign so she wouldn't lose her small pension.

He looked at Madeline—the woman who had once loved him, who had trusted him with her heart and her child, and whom he had betrayed in the most monstrous way imaginable.
With a trembling hand, holding the pen provided by the court reporter, Jeffrey signed his name on the line, surrendering his son, his wealth, and his dignity forever.
