Chapter 6 - Chloe’s Public Meltdown and the AG’s Press Release

By Wednesday afternoon, the story had broken containment.

What started as a local elder abuse investigation erupted into a statewide media firestorm. Major news outlets in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland picked up the story, captivated by the dramatic intersection of high-society white-collar crime and a high-ranking state prosecutor bringing down her own flesh and blood.

Chloe Vance, released on a temporary signature bond while awaiting trial preparation, decided to take matters into her own hands in the worst possible way.

Instead of keeping a low profile, Chloe logged onto her public Instagram and Facebook accounts—platforms she had spent years curating to project an image of philanthropic luxury and upper-class perfection—and posted a frantic, tear-soaked twelve-minute video.

In the video, Chloe sat in the front seat of her silver Volvo (now parked in her parents' driveway since their home accounts were frozen), wearing oversized designer sunglasses and sobbing hysterically.

"You guys... you all know me," Chloe wailed into the camera, her mascara running down her cheeks. "You know how hard Julian and I worked to take care of his sweet, elderly mother! And now, because of a vicious, power-hungry sister who hasn't visited home in years, we are being dragged through the mud by the corrupt Attorney General’s office! Elena Vance is abusing her state power just to ruin our lives and steal our inheritance! Please... share this video! Help us fight this tyrannical state corruption!"

The video spread like wildfire across local community groups. Within two hours, it had garnered over fifty thousand views, with a polarized mix of sympathetic commenters falling for her crocodile tears and cynical internet sleuths tearing her apart.

I was sitting at my desk in the Attorney General’s office when Marcus walked in, tossing a printed transcript of Chloe’s social media rant onto my desk with a disgusted snort.

"Well, your sister-in-law is officially digging her own grave with a backhoe," Marcus said, shaking his head. "She’s violating standard pre-trial gag considerations and actively tampering with public perception of an ongoing criminal prosecution."

I picked up the transcript, scanning the hysterical accusations of corruption and state tyranny. A slow, calm smile spread across my face.

"Let her talk, Marcus," I said quietly. "In fact, let’s give her an even bigger megaphone."

"What do you mean?" Marcus asked, raising an eyebrow. "Draft a formal press release from the Office of the Attorney General," I instructed, standing up and walking over to the whiteboard behind my desk. "Include the official forensic audit summary, the unredacted medical examination notes detailing the rope marks and bruises, two of the time-stamped bathroom photographs, and the indictment charges for grand theft, elder abuse, and unlawful imprisonment."

Marcus’s eyes widened, a slow grin spreading across his face. "You want to release the evidentiary exhibits to the press?"

"Public transparency is the cornerstone of public prosecution," I replied smoothly. "If Chloe wants to try her case in the court of public opinion, we’ll give the public the unvarnished, undisputed truth. Let’s see how many of her Facebook friends defend her after they see the high-resolution photographs of an eighty-year-old woman’s bruised ribs."

Within ninety minutes, the Attorney General’s office officially published the comprehensive evidence packet to the state press corps and uploaded the public-record summaries to our official state portal.

The backlash against Chloe was instantaneous and catastrophic.

The sympathetic comments on her Instagram video evaporated within minutes, replaced by thousands of furious messages condemning her cruelty. Within three hours, Chloe had deactivated all her social media accounts, deleted her profile pictures, and retreated entirely from public view, realizing too late that playing the victim against an Assistant Attorney General armed with forensic proof was the single most disastrous mistake of her life.
