Chapter 9 - The Hammer of Justice Falls

The sentencing hearing on Friday morning was swift, solemn, and absolute.

Judge Thorne did not mince words. Before handing down the final judgment, he addressed the packed courtroom with a scathing rebuke that was broadcast live across the state.

"There are few crimes more despicable than those committed against the elderly by the very people entrusted with their care and protection," Judge Thorne declared, his voice resonating with righteous authority. "Julian Vance and Chloe Vance did not merely commit white-collar financial fraud. They weaponized family trust, subjected a vulnerable senior citizen to physical degradation and unlawful imprisonment, and traded human dignity for greed. The law must, and will, respond with uncompromising severity."

He looked down from the bench at the defendants, who stood before him in orange jumpsuits, their heads bowed.

"Julian Vance, for forty-seven counts of grand theft, elder abuse, forgery, and unlawful imprisonment, this court sentences you to fourteen years in the Ohio State Penitentiary, with zero possibility of early parole. You are ordered to pay full restitution of one point four million dollars to the victim's estate."

Julian closed his eyes, his knees buckling slightly before the bailiff steadied him.

"Chloe Vance, for your active participation in financial exploitation and physical elder abuse, this court sentences you to nine years in the Ohio Women's Reformatory. Restitution orders apply jointly and severally."

The gavel came down with a sharp, explosive crack.

Case closed.

As the bailiffs escorted Julian and Chloe out through the side doors—their luxury lifestyle, designer clothes, and arrogant smiles reduced to prison numbers and orange jumpsuits—I sat quietly at the prosecution table, packing my binders into my leather briefcase.

Marcus walked over, handing me my coat. "It’s over, Counselor. You won."

"It's not a victory, Marcus," I said softly, zipping my briefcase closed. "It's just the restoration of order. There are no winners when a family destroys itself from the inside out."

"True," Marcus agreed, walking with me toward the courtroom exit. "But your mother gets her home, her peace, and her life back. That’s more than enough."
