Chapter 4 - The Shattered Engagement

By noon the following day, news of the incident had spread through the city like wildfire.

My parents’ neighborhood was high-end, the kind of place where people paid millions to maintain an image of absolute perfection. But perfection shattered quickly when three police cars, a forensic van, and a Child Protective Services unit remained parked outside the Hayes residence for eighteen straight hours.

I was sitting in the hospital lobby, waiting for Lily’s final discharge clearance, when the double glass doors opened.

Valerie walked in.

She looked dreadful. Her expensive blowout was matted, her mascara was smeared around her swollen red eyes, and she was wearing a wrinkled tracksuit. Behind her walked Chloe, who looked hollowed out, staring blankly at the floor.

The moment Valerie spotted me, her exhaustion transformed into ugly, desperate fury. She marched across the lobby floor, her heels clicking loudly against the tile.

“You happy now, Clara?!” Valerie spat, stopping five feet away as the security guard stepped forward to watch her. “You completely destroyed us!”

I stood up slowly, keeping my arms crossed over my chest. “I destroyed you? Valerie, you held the dumpster lid open while Dad threw my daughter inside.”

“It was supposed to be temporary!” Valerie shrieked, drawing the eyes of every nurse and patient in the waiting room.

“Mom said the medication would make her sleep for two hours! We were going to go get her right after the family photos were done! We didn't mean for her to get buried under garbage!”

“She was two years old!” I screamed back, stepping right into her face.

“You poisoned a baby because you were worried her birthday blanket didn't match Chloe’s party theme! Do you hear yourself? You are a monster!”

Chloe suddenly burst into hysterical tears, sinking into one of the lobby chairs, covering her face with her hands.

“Ethan canceled the wedding, Aunt Clara!” Chloe sobbed, her voice muffled by her trembling hands. “His father pulled his investment from Mom’s salon! They sent a courier to our house an hour ago to demand the engagement ring back! My whole life is ruined!”

“Your life?” I looked down at my niece with pure coldness. “My daughter almost died in a pile of trash, Chloe. You don't have a life to complain about.”

“Mom and Grandma did it for me!” Chloe yelled back, looking up with eyes filled with venomous self-pity. “Because you insisted on bringing a fatherless child to my special day! You knew today was supposed to be about me, but you insisted on making it about Lily’s birthday! You ruined my dress! You ruined my future!”

I looked at my sister and my niece, suddenly realizing the full extent of the sickness that ran in my family.

To them, human life, safety, and blood meant nothing. The only currency they recognized was status, appearances, and control. For years, I had been the black sheep because I refused to play their social games. When I got pregnant with Lily and chose to raise her on my own without relying on my parents’ trust fund, they viewed my independence as an insult to their carefully constructed empire.

“Where are Mom and Dad?” I asked coldly.

Valerie swallowed hard, her anger momentarily faltering. “The police let us go on conditional bail... but they kept Mom and Dad in holding cells. The prosecutor is filing felony charges. Clara... please. You have to drop the charges. Tell the police it was a misunderstanding.”

“A misunderstanding?” I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “You think I can just drop charges for attempted murder?”

May you like

“If Mom and Dad go to prison, the family business will collapse!” Valerie pleaded, stepping closer and dropping her voice into a desperate whisper. “Their estate will be frozen! Chloe won't have a wedding, I’ll lose my house, and you won't get a single dime from the family inheritance! Is that what you want? To leave yourself with nothing?”

“I have everything I need,” I said, looking toward the hallway where a nurse was pushing Lily in a stroller, her color finally returning to her cheeks. “And as for the inheritance... you can keep every poisoned cent.”
