Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Conspiracy

Three days after Lily was discharged from the hospital, I sat in the office of Arthur Vance—a high-powered criminal defense attorney who had taken my case pro bono after hearing the 911 audio on the news.

Sitting across from us was Detective Miller.

“The forensics team completed their sweep of your parents’ home,” Detective Miller said, placing a thick stack of printed documents onto the mahogany desk. “What we found goes beyond a reckless decision made on the day of the party.”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

Miller pulled out a copy of text messages retrieved from Evelyn’s, Valerie’s, and Chloe’s confiscated phones.

Text Chain: “Chloe’s Big Day” (Dated 3 days before the party)

Evelyn: Clara insists on bringing the baby. She says it’s Lily’s birthday and she wants her there.

Valerie: Absolutely not. That brat will cry during the speeches and draw attention away from Chloe. We need to tell Clara the venue doesn't allow children.

Evelyn: She already knows it’s at our house. She won't fall for that. Don't worry, I have some of my sleeping syrup left over from my procedure. A few drops in juice, and the child will sleep in the back bedroom through the whole event.

Chloe: Make sure she stays out of the photos. The Sterlings are very particular about family image. A child born out of wedlock doesn't fit the aesthetic.

Valerie: What if Clara goes looking for her in the bedroom?

Evelyn: Then we lock the bedroom from the outside and keep Clara busy on the patio. If she makes a scene, Richard will escort her off the property.

I read the messages, my hand shaking so violently the paper rattled.

They hadn't just panicked in the heat of the moment. They had planned to drug my child days in advance.

“And the dumpster?” Attorney Vance asked, leaning forward. “Why move her from the house to the garbage bin?”

Detective Miller pulled out a second document.

“According to Richard’s statement under interrogation,” Miller explained, “at 4:00 p.m., fifteen minutes before guests arrived, Lily began having a mild allergic reaction to the syrup. She started wheezing and twitching in her sleep.”

My heart stopped. “They knew she was reacting to the poison?”

“Yes,” Miller said grimly. “Your mother panicked. She realized that if the Sterling family arrived and saw a toddler having a medical emergency inside the house, someone would call 911, and the drug in her system would be discovered. So Richard and Evelyn decided to hide the child outside where no one would see her until the Sterlings left.”

“They put a suffocating, twitching child into a trash bin to protect a social ladder,” Vance said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “That isn't just cruelty. That is malice aforethought.”

“There’s more,” Miller added, looking directly at me. “Your father’s attorney just filed an emergency petition with the Family Court this morning.”

I blinked. “A petition for what?”

“Your parents are filing for emergency temporary custody of Lily,” Miller said.

I sprang out of my chair. “ARE THEY INSANE?! They tried to kill her!”

“Their lawyer argument,” Vance explained calmly, placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder, “is that you are an unfit, financially unstable mother who left her child unattended at a party, leading to an accidental ingestion of medication. They are claiming you put Lily in the dumpster yourself during a psychotic episode to frame your parents out of financial greed.”

I stared at Vance, my chest heaving, blood roaring in my ears.

They had poisoned my child, thrown her in the trash, and now they were using their millions to try to take her away from me permanently so they could cover up their crime.

“They want a war?” I whispered, my voice dripping with cold, unyielding rage. “Then let’s give them one.”
