Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Glass

The stinging silence that followed the heavy smack across Garrett’s cheek did not last.

It broke open like a fractured dam.

Murmurs rippled through the four hundred elite guests packed into the Grand Palace Hotel’s grand ballroom. Silicon Valley venture capitalists, tech founders in bespoke Giorgio Armani suits, and society elites who usually traded gossip over artisanal coffee were suddenly frozen in place, their champagne flutes hovering inches from their mouths. They stared at Evelyn Vance—the quiet, unassuming, thrift-store-wearing wife they had silently pitied or ignored for three years—as if she had suddenly grown a second head.

Garrett staggered back, clutching his left cheek. A bright, angry crimson handprint bloomed across his pale skin, swelling rapidly against the stark white collar of his tuxedo shirt. His mouth worked soundlessly for a moment, his eyes wide with a volatile mix of humiliation and incandescent rage.

"Have you completely lost your mind?" Garrett roared, his voice cracking with righteous indignation as the shock wore off. He lunged forward, his arm drawn back. "You ungrateful, miserable bitch! You actually laid a hand on me in front of my investors?"

Before his fist could connect, two massive figures materialized from the shadows near the ballroom’s arched mahogany doors.

They weren't hotel security. They were men in impeccably tailored charcoal suits, wearing dark earpieces and possessing the cold, dead-eyed efficiency of elite private protection detail. They moved with terrifying speed. In a fraction of a second, the larger of the two caught Garrett’s wrist mid-swing, twisting his arm upward with clinical precision.

A sharp, agonized yelp tore from Garrett’s throat as his shoulder joint neared its breaking point.

"Get your hands off me!" Garrett shrieked, dropping to his knees as the guard forced him down. "Do you know who I am? I am Garrett Lawson! CEO of NexusSphere! Security! Throw these trashy peasants out on the street!"

He looked frantically around the room, expecting his business partners, his sycophantic vice presidents, and his influential friends to rush to his defense. Instead, he found only a wall of averted gazes. High-net-worth individuals are notoriously allergic to sinking ships, and the look in Evelyn’s eyes suggested that the Titanic wasn't just hitting an iceberg—it had already been dynamited.

Evelyn didn't flinch. She ignored her husband entirely as she knelt back down beside her mother, gently brushing the delicate white powder and stray dust from the elderly woman’s faded cardigan.

"Mom, can you stand?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping all its previous ice, replaced by a warm, protective tenderness that contrasted sharply with the violence of a moment ago.

"Evie... your husband... his investors..." Mrs. Vance whispered, her eyes brimming with humiliated tears as she pressed a trembling, calloused hand to her scraped forehead. "We should go. We don't belong here. I told you my shoes would leave marks on the carpet..."

"You don't ever have to apologize for existing, Mom," Evelyn said softly. She scooped her mother up effortlessly into her arms, ignoring the audible gasps from society women who couldn't fathom a daughter carrying her own working-class mother in a room full of hired staff.

As Evelyn rose, carrying her mother toward the private VIP elevator at the back of the hall, she paused. She turned her head slightly over her shoulder, her gaze locking onto Garrett, who was still pinned to the marble floor by Vance Global’s lead security operative.

"Garrett," Evelyn called out clearly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent, sprawling room. "Enjoy the party. It's the last one you'll ever throw on my dime."

With that, the private elevator doors slid shut with a soft, pneumatic hiss, sealing her and her mother inside and leaving the glittering ballroom in a state of absolute, paralyzed chaos.
