Chapter 7 - The Weight of Inheritance

High above the city, on the fiftieth floor of the Vance Global Tower, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the despair playing out in the penthouse.

Evelyn stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of her private office, holding a warm cup of herbal tea. Behind her sat her mother, Margaret Vance, resting comfortably on a plush velvet armchair in a room that smelled of fresh lilies and quiet luxury.

Marcus walked into the office, holding a thick leather-bound folio.

"The restraining order has been served, Evie," Marcus said, tossing the confirmation slip onto the mahogany desk. "And the corporate liquidation of NexusSphere is officially complete. All assets have been swept back into the Vance Global portfolio. Total recovery cost: negligible."

Evelyn turned around, her expression calm, serene, and entirely unburdened for the first time in three years.

She walked over to her mother, kneeling beside her chair and taking her weathered, calloused hands in her own.

"How are you feeling, Mom?" Evelyn asked softly.

Margaret smiled, a gentle, peaceful expression that reached her tired eyes for the first time in decades.

"I feel like I can finally breathe, honey," Margaret whispered, stroking Evelyn’s hair. "I was so worried... I thought I ruined your life. I thought because I wore my old cardigan to that fancy hotel, I dragged you down."

"Never, Mom," Evelyn said fiercely, pressing a kiss to her mother’s knuckles. "You never dragged me down. I chose to stay in the mud because I wanted to believe that a man could love me for my heart, not my bank account. But I’ve learned my lesson. From now on, nobody will ever disrespect you in my presence again."

Marcus crossed his arms, leaning against the doorframe with a satisfied smirk.

"So, cousin," Marcus said, his tone turning businesslike. "Now that you’ve shed the dead weight, what’s next on the agenda? The Board of Directors is holding a full assembly tomorrow morning to officially vote you in as active Chairperson and CEO of Vance Global. The press is already clamoring for a statement about the mysterious tech mogul stepping out of the shadows."

Evelyn stood up, walking toward her executive desk where the heavy gold seal of Vance Global rested—a symbol of immense, unchecked corporate power that spanned continents.

She picked up the heavy gold stamp, feeling its cool, reassuring weight in her palm.

"Let them talk, Marcus," Evelyn said, her eyes flashing with a sharp, brilliant light. "For three years, they thought I was a nobody. They thought they could step on me, mock my family, and spit on my mother."

She set the gold seal down on a fresh stack of corporate documents with a solid, resounding thud.

"It’s time to show Silicon Valley what happens when a Vance stops playing nice."
