Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Up in the private penthouse suite where this entire impossible journey had begun two months ago, the city lights twinkled like a million fallen stars against the Manhattan skyline.

I pushed the door open to find Savannah sitting on the floor by the window, teaching Leo how to fold a complex paper crane out of thick cardstock.

My son was completely focused, his tongue poking out slightly between his lips as he carefully creased the paper edge, just like Savannah was doing.

I leaned against the doorframe, watching them, feeling a profound sense of peace I had never experienced in my entire life. The corporate war was won. My enemies were behind bars. The empire was secure. But none of that mattered compared to the quiet, beautiful miracle happening right in front of me.

Savannah looked up and saw me standing there. She smiled, dusting a speck of paper off her fingers, and stood up.

“Did it work?” she asked softly.

“Henderson is in federal custody,” I said, walking across the room and kneeling down beside my son. “Vance Global is entirely under our control. The board voted unanimously to restructure our entire philanthropic division to fund childhood neurological and developmental research nationwide.”

Savannah’s eyes widened. “Julian... that’s amazing.”

“No,” I said, looking up from my son into her hazel eyes. “It’s necessary.”

I turned my attention to Leo. He held the paper crane up in his small hands, looking at it with absolute pride.

“Look, Daddy,” the boy whispered.

The room vanished. The city outside stopped spinning.

It wasn't a shaky breath this time. It was a clear, bright, unmistakable voice—the voice of a six-year-old boy who had found his way home through the maze.

Tears spilled over my eyelashes as I reached out, my hands trembling, and gently cupped my son’s face.

“I see you, son,” I choked out, my voice thick with emotion. “I see you.”

Leo smiled—a brilliant, radiant smile that mirrored the one I had first seen in this very room two months ago—and leaned forward, wrapping his small arms around my neck.

I looked up at Savannah. She was wiping a tear from her cheek, smiling through her emotion. I stood up, closed the distance between us, and took her hands in mine.

“You said you weren't for sale, Savannah,” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. “And you were right. You’re priceless. But I am asking you, with all my heart... please don't ever leave us.”

May you like

Savannah squeezed my hands tightly, her hazel eyes shining with absolute devotion.

“I’m not going anywhere, Julian,” she whispered. “We’re home.”
